Height + Weight Heredity?
-
Hi there, long-time casual player, and now I'm starting to try an actual project. I am curious to know if/how much height and bone weight are heritable. That's the biggest factor in the project I'm considering, and I want to know if it's even possible to really breed for that beyond the foal being in the same weight class as same same parents.
Thank you in advance!DAR

What are you trying to do?
Yes there is a genetic component to height. For example
Tall Height Example
If I breed this mare CW Starry thats 17.2 hands to a stallion DBLE2 Khan Special wthay that is also 17.2 hands this is what I ended up with:
Foal 1: 17.0
Foals 2: 18.0
Foal 3: 17.1
Foal 4: 17.3
Foal 5: 18.0
Foal 6: 18.0
Foal 7: 18.0
Foal 8: 17.2
Foal 9: 17.1
Foal 10: 17.3
30% Less than 17.2 hands
10% 17.2
60% Over 17.2 hands
I have the option to GMT any of them to the range of 16.3- 18.1 so +-3 when the parents are the same height. I could have gotten 10x 16.3s or 10x 18.1s. I also could have gotten any mix within the range (which is what I got).
This would be the same with any height unless you are asking about the height regulator gene on the minis.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara |Thanked by 1DarkAngelsRising -
Shorter Height example
If I breed this mare 13579497 thats 13.2 hands to a stallion 13579498 that is also 13.2 hands this is what I ended up with:
Foal 1: 13.3
Foals 2: 13.1
Foal 3: 14.0
Foal 4: 13.3
Foal 5: 13.0
Foal 6: 13.2
Foal 7: 13.0
Foal 8: 13.1
Foal 9: 14.0
Foal 10: 13.3
Foal 11: 13.2
36% Less than 13.2
18% 13.2 hands
45% Over 13.2 hands
I have the option to GMT any of them to the range of 12.3- 14.1 so +-3 when the parents are the same height. I could have gotten 10x 12.3s or 10x 14.1s. I also could have gotten any mix within the range (which is what I got).
This would be the same with any height unless you are asking about the height regulator gene on the minis.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara | -
Bone Weight example
If I breed this mare 13579497 thats 1.52 Bone to a stallion 13579498 that is also 1.41 Bone this is what I ended up with:
Foal 1: 1.37
Foals 2: 1.38
Foal 3: 1.53
Foal 4: 1.60
Foal 5: 1.54
Foal 6: 1.58
Foal 7: 1.49
Foal 8: 1.48
Foal 9: 1.42
Foal 10: 1.58
Foal 11: 1.50
5/11 Light Bone
6/11 Medium Bone
I have the option to GMT any of them to the range of 1.17- 1.77 so +-.30 when the parents are the same height. In this case 1.52 (mare) + 1.41 (stallion) /2 = 1.46 =-.30
This would be the same with any bone weight. I used light and medium for this example so it was easier to see.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara | -
Opposite Bone Weights:
Mare thats 0.66 Bone bred to a stallion thats 3.48 Bone
I got a single colt with 2.19 Bone with a GMTable range of 1.77 to 2.37. So +-.30 from the parent average of 2.07.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara | -
Opposite Heights Example:
It would be similar if you bred a 12.0 mare to a 17.0 stallion the "average" or middle height would be 14.2 hands. So the range of offspring would be 14.2 hands +-3 to give a range of 13.3-15.1 hands possible for any offspring from a 12.0/17.0 pairing.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara | -
The opposite heights/weights thing is interesting. Does that happen in real life?
I only know that my boy is a bit taller than his Sire and a bit smaller than his Dam! Weight wise he’s kind of in between… (Anglo-Arab x Connemara) -
@Seraphim falls based on my research yes and no. Real life genetics aren't guaranteed with sizes, and its a grey area. Some say the foal splits the difference and some say it'll be random.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara |Thanked by 1Seraphim falls

@cottonwoods , not completely random.. each parent shares genes..She/her my user # is 59035

@cottonwoods
I'm trying to breed the biggest horses I can for both height and weight
Thank you so much for taking the time to give me such in-depth answers!DAR
