So,,,,brown is weird.

Homozygous brown with no sooty is phenotypically (physically looks like) bay, so those horse's color name is bay. With at least one darkening gene they are noticabely darker and called brown. Het brown (Ata / aAt) is always much darker than Hom brown, regardless of how many darkening genes there are, so it will always be called brown.

The same holds true in champagnes--Hom brown champagne with no darkening genes looks the same as bay with no darkening genes, so the color name is the same, Amber Champagne. Once you add any sooty or DP to the mix, they're sable.

My King's Ransom seems to fit all the criteria for sable and yet he's called Amber. *scratching head* I guess he's only het brown? They have to be hom AtAt plus at least one darkening gene to get the Sable? *goes back to examining her herds with search*
