I use the rose backgrounds for mares, and halters in colors corresponding to their paper level (or expected level) for broodmares and tack for those being shown. I.e. red papered mares have red rose backgrounds and red halters, fillies have red rose backgrounds and red themes tack.
Stallions are fully tacked up but currently no theme to colors, etc. I may change their colors to correspond with the appropriate level in mares.

Edit to add examples:

red papered mares/fillies being shown
Yellow, etc follow the theme but in corresponding colors. Gold mares are white/silver colored.

stallions and colts all levels
I may change the way I do the boys, but for now this is it.

And yearlings follow the same theme as broodmares but with a black halter for colts.
