A confession...

I've been playing this game for a little while and I'm still not really sure what I'm doing or what I *want* to be doing.
I think I understand the basics, but I get brain fog due to a chronic illness, so the things I do know tend to slip away from me.
But when it comes to breeding, I tend to just breed for pretty colours I like.
So, I guess my request for help is, what do you look for when picking horses for breeding?
What makes a horse stand out to you and what should I be looking for?
I think I need some help! -
I think you can play this game in whatever way you find the most enjoyable. The way one person enjoys playing maybe very unenjoyable for someone else.
I think a plus of this game is you can focus on whatever aspects you enjoy the most. If you enjoy placing well on the leaderboards you can deep dive into learning what that takes. If you enjoy the genetics you can focus on that. If you enjoy working with other members towards a common goal then the Futurities or affiliating with other players on a breed can be a focus. -
Just breeding for the pretty colors and not giving a hoot about how others play here is a very valid choice. And a common thing.
The only real thing I look for in a horse to breed is a long gene string. Yes I want to make better quality horses, but it means more if they are colorful.
Can we answer a question or two that will make you more happy with the way you play?45120 -
So, I started differently from most people I think. The genes I wanted in my lines were really important to me, so I didn't quality test anyone for my first year and a half or so. I focused on keeping horses that:
1) Had the genes I wanted; and / or
2) Were a paper level ahead of their parents.
By the time I started quality testing, all of my horses were at breeding cap anyways.
Which really just goes to prove what Highstorm said: You can be successful in this game by playing pretty much however is fun for you, and however you want to prioritize.
I also get the brain fog, so my lines / breeds have far less rules than many others on here. I breed for the genes I like, and those can be very flexible, and that's about all I focus on.

I have plans, then get distracted by other projects. Then I'll forget a project for a couple months. Then find it in my barn again and may or may not pick it up depending on my mood. So do what makes you happy.

As a side note: One thing I think all the commenter's on this thread have in common is we do futurities. Futurities allow you to participate in the community, share horses and win awards regardless of papers, PT, generation or genes. So those can be a really cool option if you're wanting to feel like your focused on a goal, while having the flexibility to do whatever you want! :)
Edit: As an example, this is my current futurity line up. It's super varied, but all of these horses are special to me.

I like to breed true to real life breed standards down but with high 15.0+ PT when possible.
There's not really a wrong way to play the game. I don't know that any 2 of us play this game exactly the same way and thats one of many reasons why we love this game. A lot of us have really particular lines/breeds that we just liked a certain combination of genes and we made it a breed.

Another chronically ill, brain fog player here. I also have narcolepsy, which results in some really wild brain nonsense :)) Breeding only for pretty colors that you like is a completely valid breeding plan on here. Only you can decide what you want out of your program, whether that’s pretty colors, high papers, specific eras, or all of the above.
If you decide papers/breeding quality is important to you, it’s very easy to obtain high quality breeding stock with your favorite genes. This is where reaching out to other players helps a lot!
My personal goal was to compete on the color boards, and I made that my goal very early on. But I also really like loud horses, so all of mine are very boldly marked too. As Poppidoll mentioned, futurities are a great way to win awards and participate in community without focusing on papers.
Feel free to send me a message at any time, I am always willing to help out other players. I love to share what I know and get to know other players. I also have lots of high quality stock to share.Continuing my reign as the most annoying player on the forums and hgg’s favorite butch lesbian cowboy

Thank you so much for this, it's sometimes a little overwhelming to see everyone chatting about genes and breeding and things I don't understand. So it's really reassuring to know that there's no wrong way to play. I'm hoping if I just keep going doing the things I like, then I'll learn as I go.
I really appreciate all of your kind advice. I'll have a look into futurities as that sounds perfect for me.
Until then, I'll be trying to breed beautiful brown and white tobiano horses and liver chestnuts and just having fun doing that :-)
