A conversation happened the other day on Discord about how stallion owners get the bulk of the gmts on the futurity but foal breeders do the bulk of the work, take on most of the risk and use the most stall space. On every server, but especially on bluegrass, it is difficult to get people to breed foals rather than just stand stallions.

Right now each era awards 56 gmts. 36 go to stallion owners with 1st place getting 10gmts, 2nd 8 gtms, 3rd 6 gmts, 4th 4 gmts, and finally 5th gets 2 gmts.

The best 10 foals from 1st and 2nd place each get 1 GMT, awarding 20 to foal owners in total.

This is the proposed change suggested yesterday on Discord:

1st place stallion 8 GMTs, best 10 foals 1 GMT each.
2nd place stallion 6 GMTs, best 10 foals 1 GMT each.
3rd place stallion 4 GMTs, best 8 foals 1 GMT each.
4th place stallion 1 GMT, best 6 foals 1 GMT each.
5th place stallion 1 GMT, best 4 foals 1 GMT each.

Before 5 stallions and 20 foals shared 56 gmts, with the proposed change 5 stallions and 38 foals would share 58 gmts.

The largest benefit to this change would be to push the value of foal breeding and reward a larger number of foal breeders in hopes of encouraging breeding rather than just standing of stallions. This is particularly needed on bluegrass where the long-standing culture of breeding to only your own stock has limited the number of futurity participants, but I think would benefit all servers.

I would like your feedback. Should we implement this change for the January awards?

Since I do more breeding than standing what with my lines being so fantasy heavy, I'm down with any plans that reward more foals. I love my future babies, but they do take up show space. The lab upgrades have made lined stock a lot more valuable in my opinion and I'm thrilled. I feel like over here we work together enough to get all the spots filled to run.

I think this is a great idea!

The people breeding to a stallion are doing the real heavy lifting, spending Hbs to breed, maintaining space for foals, showing foals each week, etc... I like the idea of gmts also going to top foals by stallions who placed a little lower and rewarding the effort of those players as well.

I love this! Im recently back from a hiatus, but even before the lab changes I was doing mostly embryo breeding for futurities and lots of boosting, so I felt compelled to list a lot of stallions to try to try to make up for breeding cost. This will help me focus on just a few special stallions and do even more breeding. Rather than sinking all my GMTs into creating new stallions I might actually use them to further my lines beyond G4 where I usually petered out.

I do like that idea! In the Breeding Circle discord, our unofficial rule is 10 breedings per stallion listed. That helps make sure every stallion is seen and gets a chance to make foals. A lot of the time I'll pick 2 stallions I like and breed 5 foals from each. And sometimes those foals turn into the next generation futurity stallion!

I feel like this proposed award listing is more equitable to the foal owners.

As someone who has historically done a lot of breeding and standing for fut, this sounds a great idea. I've not been very active the last few months, but futurity payout is quite unreliable with it only being the top 2 stallions paying out for their foals.

I’ve been wanting to buckle down and breed and start breeding some futurity foals in the coming seasons, so incentivizing foals from more than just the top 2 stallions sounds great to me! It would let me feel like I don’t have to be as picky about deciding which stallions I breed to and I could breed to lower/unplaced stallions that I like more.

I am wholeheartedly in favor, and I've been one of the folks with leading studs as well as someone breeding a few hundred futurity foals!

Since this is clearly unanimous on all servers, I will work on implementing this for Jan.
