Community Project - Let's create a guide to the gift exchange
-
I would love to build some information into the wiki about everything we can think of for the GE. We have a bit more than 2 weeks before the gift exchange opens for registrations so now seems like the perfect timing.
Can you help me come up with ideas about what we should cover? I want to make this as all-encompassing as possible.
Here are some topics I and the discord group came up with:
Etiquette: Follow the wishlists, ask if you don't understand, don't sell your gifts during the exchange. Don't give people their own lines etc.
Expectations: What is it like at each level, what it takes to move up in levels, what you are expected to spend, what it takes to qualify for participation.
Wishlists: How to make a good wishlist, how to read a wishlist. What not to ask for.
How to get help.
____
What suggestions do you have either for topics or more in-depth? I would also love to get a bunch of sample wish lists at different levels to have in the guide.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

I really like this idea and think it will help a lot of people!
I think communication and using the built in chat is super important. If you are having a tough time finding the things your giftee wants let them know. I think most of us want to make things as easy as we can on our gifter. I had gifter ask if a certain horse would work for my program or if I am open to a WB even if I prefer an RH.
Examples of appropriate and inappropriate requests for the different lvls would be great. Like a Lvl 1 should not be asking for *** double boosted 15.5pt mares.
Also more detail is often better than less. A list with minimal details can be super stressful to someone who wants little more guidance.
Here is what I believe was my lvl 1wishlist.
Horses I collect must ALWAYS have:
I focus on Riding Horses, though I may also use a WB if it otherwise fits my programs. I tend to prefer black based horses, black and grullo are at the top of my list. If it is black or grullo I'm going to like it. I also like Silver Blacks with Sty or S+.
I enjoy collecting horses that might have:
Sooty, Z, DP, sa, TE1 or TE2, gp, nd1, p, To.
Horses I collect must NEVER have:
Appaloosa, Cream, Champagne. Draft or Pony.
My main lines currently are Black and Grullo. I am also dabbling in a line of Satins, The Blackest Night only foundations, TE1/2, Silver Black Chinchillas, and Onyx. As you can see I have way too many irons in the fire, lol. Being a newer member I mostly need foundation and Gen2 and Gen3 horses.
I am always on the lookout for horses for my show herd. I am still working on building up my show herd so will always appreciate a good show horse or two.
I would prefer one gift that closely matches what I need rather than multiple gifts that do not fit my needs. One horse that I really need is more desirable for me than multiple horses that aren't a good fit for my current goals. -
I like treating level 2 like it's level 3, because honestly I don't always know if I'll be able to keep my premium on and it's fun to spoil people. If your wishlist says I can blow my whole budget I will. This is not saying go into debt, but there is no top limit to the level you are in if you see something that you like.45120Thanked by 1DoubleMash2

@Seaswell
This is exactly me as well. I am terrified of exchanging at the L3, but if I can, I will spoil (I believe I do?) my L2.
As I am officially retired and live on a fixed income, my spending has been highly curtailed. A couple of years ago, I had so much disposable income that I think I could have made a few car payments for what I've spent on my game(s)! :))HJ2, Forest Server Player ID#25193 - DoubleMash2 Sunalta (Main breed), Khan Chocloate line of Pura Raza Española, and *new* Kilkenners line of Irish Draft. If you are looking for straws/eggs from my stock, please feel free to message me.

I am also in the group that likes to blow the budget, but I do want to highlight that it is never my expectation that my gifter do the same!
For level 1 I usually request certain herd helpers, straws or horses from breeders I admire, show ponies, etc.
For level 2 my requests are a bit more specific, including horses with specific gene combos I'm looking for, higher papered horses, pointed creates, and different herd helpers.
I agree that using the chat function is great to clarify things with your giftee! Also, don't be afraid to ask other players for help, most of us open our barns during GE, even when we're not actively participating.
It's always a good idea to outline your dream horse or what you're currently wanting for your breeding program, because sometimes you get lucky via your gifter or via RAoG.
I personally find vague wishlists really stressful to shop for. I much prefer specific requests, or having goals outlined so I know what kind of things will be the most helpful.
Please always include any lisences you own! I've had to go through my giftee's barn in the past to figure out their lisences because they weren't specific about them.
Things anyone can do to help out during GE:
Please gene and paper test intact horses and gene and PT test spelded horses before auctioning them during GE month.
I'll come back and add example wishlists later when I have more energy :-B

Personally, I think going to someone's page to look at the licenses they have should be the expected thing to do. Listing every license seems odd to me when they are already listed on the page.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Where are they listed on the page? I scrolled through this person's horses to find them all.
Edit: Omg they show under their primary barn? I have never bothered to scroll down past anyone's primary barn. I would never have expected additional info to be there. THIS is the kind of info that needs to be in the guide.

Go to any member's page and just scroll down. Every single one is listed.
So I guess instructions on how to find gene licenses is needed.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

Wait what? I did not know they were listed there! That is huge; I've also been searching through their barns to try to find non-spelds that prove they have the license.

Taking a break from this for now. I have started working on the guide. It is set up so people can leave comments on the document.

ETA: I went ahead and turned comments off as I found it was making it really hard to work on the document. Once it is in the wiki it will be available to add pictures too, make edits etc.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Oh something I thought of and probably more of an etiquette sort of thing.
During the GE I avoid bidding on or buying things that I have put on my list for myself.
Also if my giftee lists like a New Coke as a favorite RS they would like, and 2 come up for auction I will only bid on one and avoid being greedy and trying to win both horses because chances are someone else is also trying to buy one for their giftee. Same for pointed creates. I may bid on a few, but I avoid bidding on every single one that is available to make sure everyone has a chance to win some for the GE. -
I am working on an auction edit to make sure people share the auction house during the exchange for just that reason.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

Awesome! It can be a challenge during the GE. Especially when I was new older accounts could simply crank the bids up to a point that I could not compete. It can be especially frustrating when you are new and funds are limited and you are being outbid on everything.
-
I've been trying to purchase pointed horses to give out during the GE, but unless I'm online when an auction ends to put in a last second bid it's hard to win. I wanted to get some horses out away before the GE so I wouldn't have to compete against other members also trying to buy gifts. Last year I put together little show herd packages for level 1s in the RAOG to help start building a show herd.Thanked by 1Ammit

I could use some help coming up with a list of these that are appropriate to ask for by level.
What's OK to ask for at Level 1 versus 2? Obviously, anything goes at 3 but the line between 1 and 2 is less clear.

For level 1 show horses are always a good request, just don't ask for them to all be 1y/o 1k creates.
Rank Specials, again just be mindful of how rare an RS is. Asking for one that normally goes for 500k+ or of which there are only a few on the server isn't a fair ask.
Asking for * or some **mares/stallions is okay IMO. Most older accounts are very willing to help with this.
Straws/eggs/embryos(depending on if an account is upgraded/premium).
List what colors/genes you are breeding for. If you need horses of a specific generation, paper level, size, and/or era.
At level 2, again show horses are always a good request.
If you have some licenses you can request some lined horses for those breeding programs. Just do a quick search and make sure you aren't requesting a hard to find gene combination.
Ask for your favorite RS, just be sure you aren't asking for multiple ones that are rare or go for very high amounts. If they need to still be GTMable specify that.
** mares/stallions would be an acceptable request IMO. A lot of older accounts are willing to provide ** mares/stallions during the GE.
*** straws/eggs/embryos. If there are any specific stallions/mares you like, and who are archived or over 19, this can be a good ask. Make sure your request is one that can be filled and you aren't asking for straws from a stallion who only has a few straws or who belongs to an inactive account.Thanked by 1Ammit -

I got the first pass done. Haystack and I are working on figuring out how we want to host this thing. If you see things that need clarification or additional things that need added let me know.

For new players:
Basic upgrade giftees cannot recieve eggs, only straws or embryos.
I see the word "pointed" get thrown around in the forums a lot, so just the fact that in GE a 7 year old horse with 22 points doesn't count as pointed. If someone asks for pointed creates, they are generally looking for a horse with at least as many points as the average horse will recieve by that age, if not more than that.
Ie. 4 year olds with 200+ points. 10 year olds with 500 - 600+ points. Etc. (Personally I'm fine with a 10 year old with 400+, but I know *a lot* of players cull any 10 year olds under 500 points.)
Learning to use the horse search is the most important thing you will do.
If you're having trouble finding affordable higher papered straws, search for futurity studs and message their owners to ask if you can get straws from them for GE. Most of us won't have an issue with that.
This would be beyond a level 1 wishlist, but throwing it in here anyways: Maxing is different than boosting.
PT does not affect breeding ability, only training ability.
Consistent and Inconsistent horse earnings tend to balance out over their lifetimes, and neither affects the horse's offspring.
Follow the wishlist! People have different tastes, what you like is not necessarily what your giftee will like.
Brindle and chimera are different. People on here use "brindle" to mean chimeras, but you can also get brindle horses with one gene strand. For instance, when I started a "brindle" line, I meant a LOT OF dun factor promoter. Others say "brindle" to mean chimera horses. So that may be a good thing to clarify before you start buying!
Edit to add: Also, that a lot of players will be looking for pointed creates, and if you decide to sell or auction yours as a new player, you should sell them for roughly half their lifetime payout :)
