Etiquette for changing, name, breed, tattoos etc
-
What is the general etiquette for changing the name, breed, tattoos, GMTing horses you buy from other players.
I understand that once you sell a horse or buy it the original owner doesn't have a say in it, but I was wondering if theres a general or unspoken "rule" of politeness.
The community on this game is amazing, so I figured I'd ask. :)| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara | -
I always encourage people that if they care, don't sell it. Prevents a lot of issues. If you sell it expect it to be changed.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Personally I think it's fun when people keep the name I chose for a horse, but I'm not insulted if they change it. Sometimes their names are better.
Once I bought a stud and turned around and auctioned him for more. The previous owner was upset so, I pulled him from the auction. Uncomfortable!She/her my user # is 59035 -
For me personally, if I buy a horse directly from their breeder, and the horse has breeder initials leading their name, I’ll keep those and just change the main name. For example, I kept the “HF” on my stud HF A Sure Thing as a nod to his breeder HighstormFarm. I also tend to keep original breeder tattoos and just add my own onto the horse wherever it fits.
There’s no set rule though, and I think most people don’t care what you do once the horse leaves their barn. I personally don’t mind if people remove my tattoos or remove my leading initials once they buy a horse from me. When in doubt, you can always ask the person you’re buying from.✿ Kismet | #38280 | Bootstrapping Excellence ✿Thanked by 1Cottonwoods -
There’s no rules. I personally will add my tag (VGN) in front of the breeder’s tag if the horse was sold to me with a proper name and not an ID number. I like to do this as a nod to their original breeder, and so I can keep track of who’s who in my barns. This also helps me when I check out horses pedigrees that I don’t own- I can see who’s got horses I bred or own in their lines. I always keep breeder tattoos, even if I add my own on later.Continuing my reign as the most annoying player on the forums and hgg’s favorite butch lesbian cowboy

Being "in dogs" for many years I like to put the breeder's prefix on the horses if I can figure them out. If I can't, I use my best guess. Since I'm being helped by the hard work of the breeder, I think they deserve credit. I usually don't remove tattoos, either, for the same reason.

I usually leave a breeder's prefix. If I am buying a stallion or mare I may change the name or I may not. I don't usually mess around with tattoos.
Once I sell a horse the owner can do as they like. I do think it's cool when someone keeps my prefix and I see the horse out and about :)
If you are worried you can always reach out to the previous owner and ask them.Thanked by 1Cottonwoods -
I usually keep the breeders prefix if there is one, but if not named I just give them a generic G2 G3 etc for generation. I delete all breeders tattoos though, not really a fan of tattoos, and certainly gmt them when I wish to.
Once they are sold they are the owners to do with what they want, thus why I don't usually sell anything I've already bred fromThanked by 1Cottonwoods -
I don't delete anything, but unless a mare comes with a one word name all my horses get renamed to my system.45120Thanked by 1Cottonwoods

I don't usually add my tattoo to a horse I've purchased (I did have a couple of misclicks in the past when we had to choose to add a tattoo rather than it being applied automatically) and I leave the ones the original owner had. That's pretty much it. I name as I please, tack as I please and use as I please, even if that includes spay/gelding or selling if it doesn't match my breeding program. I label all of my gift ponies so I don't accidentally sell them, thoughThanked by 1Cottonwoods

I leave tattoos alone, rename with generation, if my name system leaves room I leave breeder prefixes. But if they don't I delete them. If the horse has tack I leave it if they don't I add mane tail and background. I don't buy or sell very often. And I haven't had any problems. If I'm attached to a horse and they don't fit my program I will geld/spay and pop them in a show barn. Or rename with an R or put retired in their name.
Once I sell its not mine to dictate, people are free to sell or change if they desire.ID 52206
