Question on priorities
  • So I know what my end goal is for my 2 WB lines but should be first trying to establish the base colour, then add the ice then improve them all to gold/star. Should I improve them to gold/star then weed out the colours I don't want. Does it make a difference?

Once I get them established looking like I want I assume then I focus on Performance for showing and how does one increase that significantly?

If I don't test a "boostrap" foal because I like the colour and want to breed it will the fact that it has not passed SBA have any impact on its offsprings ability to pass?

  • Great questions! I too would like to know what those more experienced have to say.
I've been trying to stay in a general color scheme but focusing on breeding ability first.

  • It will depend on if you want to add the genes onto a foundation or lined. With an unbred foundation you can put any gene you want onto them. If a horse is lined you can only GMT genes they could have gotten from their sire or dam, or breed them to a horse with the genes you want and hope their foal gets the genes you want or gmt them on. Often members will create a foundation with the genes they want to start a line.

Horse that are good breeding quality will produce foals that perform well. The only thing I would keep an eye on is consistency.

It will have an impact depending on what the horse is bred to. A Red bred to a **Star will not result in a foal that passes. If you want foals that will bass BA/SBA you want to match up papering to give yourself a better chance of getting passing foals. If you are bootstrapping you will breed your mares to better studs and breed their resulting fillies to better studs, and so on. When I need to trim down my BS mare herd I will go through and weed out mares who have better fillies to replace them, I will use comparison testing for this. I use my BS line to make show horses, I don't focus on anything other than quality with my BS herd.

In the end how you play this game is 100% up to you. You can focus entirely on color and ignore everything else, focus entirely on quality and ignore color, or something in between. Do whatever you enjoy :)

  • If I have licenses only I can't add genes correct? I have to buy them when they are available
    Thanked by 1Summervine
  • @OldCat that is correct, you own the unlock but not the item so you'd have to put them on the horse(s) you'd want

  • @OldCat yes or you can buy or breed to horses with those genes.

  • Caveat: I have not reached any particular goal, so take what I say with whatever salt you feel appropriate lol

I think you could go either way (quality first or color first) IF you were consistent doing it that way with everything you breed. That said, it seems to me that logistically it would be easier to build up a herd of horses with the exact genes you want first, and then use that herd to start breeding for quality. But this is just me puzzling it out, I'm not an expert lol :)
