Breeding boost VS maxing a horse for gmts?
  • Trying to figure out what would be best for my foundie stallion im working on, I only have so many hbs and dont have the most decent way to get them as im newish, but i want to make him the best he can be since hes my first stallion.

I know i can only use Max ability on lined horses, (which I know i cant specifically use on him), but is there a different way to up his pt score? And how high exactly would a 5% breeding boost do for him?

As for the question on whether to Max the horse or to breeding boost it, which would be better on a decently lined horse?

For example a stallion with a cap of *star from its father and **gold for its mom?

If the stallion came out *star, like his father, would it be worth to Max ability him? Or would breeding boost be better?

  • Hi!
Okay so, I’ve done this with foundations before. You should absolutely boost him. Maxing just makes horse the max ability from the parents, so the better quality the parents are the better quality the foal will be when maxed. Your foals will end up higher PT and higher papered with him being 5% boosted than they would if he wasn’t. I have a handful of boosted and double boosted foundations, it’s definitely worth it since you get higher quality lined horses quicker.
Since your boy is exceptionally perfect (B papered and 10.40 pt) he will boost to being A papered. It gives your breeding line a significant leg up. He will be on the lower end of A papered. A double boosted exceptionally perfect foundation is high A papered. You can’t up his PT score, however that doesn’t really matter since paper level is how you achieve higher PT in offspring, not the parents having high PT.

As far as maxing and boosting lined horses: in my opinion, always max them before you boost them. If you don’t, you’re missing a significant chunk of quality you’d get from maxing and after boosting your horse will be a lower quality than it could have been. Boosting without maxing out lined horses kind of defeats the purpose a little bit, since the goal of boosting is getting a higher paper level than possible without it.

  • Be aware that boosting will decrease a horse's era by one, so your stallion would go from era 13 to era 12. Also breeding an A papered foundation to Red papered foundation mares will result in fewer foals passing BA and SA because of the uneven paper breeding.

A lot depends on your goals for the line. Maxing does not affect era so I do that with most of my lined stallions.

As far as your question about maxing and boosting a *Star foal from a *Star x **Gold cross it would depend on my goal for the line. If it was a BS line and I really liked the foal I might max and boost. With my BS lines I usually only boost horses when I want to push them to a *** . A *Star x **Gold would be uneven breeding so likely not something I would do in any of my programs other than my BS and in my futurity herd. Boosting is very expensive so I am pretty selective about which horses I boost since I can reach ** without ever boosting, by simply being selective with my breeding.

Now if your goal is to get high papers as fast as possible then maxing and boosting and eventually cloning and boosting will get you there. Personally I really enjoy watching a line progress and improve over time.

  • Thank you both for your help! I think im going to boost my stallion then, but @VenomousGiant how do i double boost? And is there any age I have to boost him by?

  • No you don’t have to do it by a certain age (there used to be one). You boost the horse, then clone it. The clone will have the original boost percentage, then you add another 5% boost onto it so you have a double boosted horse :) Remember that you have to boost your horse before breeding though!

  • @VenemousGiant Can i ask you what age does a horse clone to? If i cloned him at the age of 12 would he be cloned as a foal or would his close also be 12? And could i clone him after breeding with him?

  • All clones are born as foals. You could clone a 19 year old and it would be a foal.

  • Okay thank you so much! I will have to remember to clone my GMT projects before they age out then so i can make sure they are finished up!

Is there any limit to the amount of times you can clone a horse?

  • It gets more and more expensive every time you do it.

  • Yes what Haltanny said, they’re born as foals! Cloning projects before they age out to finish them is smart, I never thought about that haha. You can clone them after breeding. I recently had the breeder of a horse I love clone him for me cause he was about to age out, and he’s got hundreds of foals.
