Edit: Colors picked; need opinions on BCs
-
My lines are out of control and I need to chop them down to more manageable specifications. I have my cob line figured out, but I need suggestions for my riding pony line and my fantasy line. I just love so many different things that I've added to pretty much every line, so now it's basically a free for all and my lines have little to no conformity. Please help me figure this out so I can do a massive cull in time for people to pick up ponies for the Gift Exchange!
Please feel free to poke through my barns (or other people's) to show me examples of what you think looks good for each line. Or just comment and help me brainstorm.
I've figured out what colors I want to focus on, now I'm trying to decide which BCs to use for each line/breed. I've edited the line description to update the new colors and to add the breed info. I've also added on my other small lines.
Bekisar - pony height, heavy bone (Cob)
Currently Suffolk Punch BC, will probably keep
pangare+ sooty+ on flaxen liver chestnut and silver brown/Bay, with non varnish snowflake, Tobiano and Belton spotting. Grey with grey reduction will be permitted. I'll eventually weed out all other dilutions and white markings.
Example horse:
4SH Severed Pioneer
Ketawa - pony height, light bone (Riding Pony)
Currently Polish Arabian, will probably keep
Black and Brown/Bay based colors with Rabicano, W20 and KP2. Gulustra Plume, Champagne desired. Sooty+, Pangare+, DP, Grey with Grey Reduction allowed.
Examples of the genes I have in this line:
Stallions in this line
Example of Rabicano W20 KP2 interaction:
10584556
Kedu - any height, light bone (Riding Horse/Pony)
no current BC, thinking Akhal Teke? Opinions?
All shades of chestnut, red dun, palomino and palomino dun with mushroom. Flaxen, DFP1 /2, Manchado and Macchiato are preferred. Most other white patterns and dilutions will be bred out.
Examples: Manchado horses
Macchiato horses
Pelung - Fantasy line
No BC currently, working to convert from cob to medium bone. Looking for medium bone BC suggestions.
All my fantasy genes on black base colors.

I’m not too helpful with gene specifics as I tend to be very loose about that in my own herd for the widest variety of appearances, but I can offer some suggestions on culling for how I do my fantasy herd!
I focus on a mix of papering, PT, and genes, and while papering and genes usually hold the highest weight right now, it’s a balancing act of all three. The other two are self explanatory, but for genes, since it’s a big jumbled pile and I can’t use any one gene as a culling point, I look at them cumulatively.
There’s two ways I do this: first, total sum of fantasy genes. A horse with watercolor, onyx, ice8 and ice11 is going to outweigh a horse with only toner and nothing else. Non-fantasy but still pretty genes (such as w8, a personal favorite) can add some weight to a choice but aren’t as strong as fantasy genes in that regard.
The second is to look at which genes: if half my herd has watercolor and toner, it holds less weight than ice 2, of which I only have a couple horses, for example. A horse with both watercolor and toner will still not be as important as a horse with only ice 2, in that case.
So, all told, looking at papering, total genes, which genes, and PT, that generally makes culling quite easy and I find myself keeping only enough from that herd to keep it going, especially after snipping all the colts. (Or, well, almost all, but I think we all have a problem with keeping too many studs around!)
Hopefully that helps you with your fantasy line a bit, to give some ideas!
You’re also welcome to take a look through my barns. Maybe a specific gene combo will catch your fancy, and I’m always up to sell straws/eggs :)
Feel free to refine/change the search if you’re curious about something specific.

@OldCat Thank you! I have nothing to add that’s helpful, I just want you to know I’m obsessed with your cob line!Continuing my reign as the most annoying player on the forums and hgg’s favorite butch lesbian cowboy

@Lallyhop that's pretty much how I cull my fantasy herd already and I still have too many horses. Hence why I need to find another way to cut down.
@VenemousGiant thank you!#28036 -
This isn't going to be super helpful probably, but I found it got way easier when I decided on specifics for my fantasy herd goals.
What kinds of looks do you like best? What inspires you in life that you could emulate / represent through pixel ponies? Which genes or combos are your faves, and which ones are just okay?
