With higher pt & papers how do you cull?
-
A lot of higher Gen, paper horses seem to not pass BA/SBA (especially bootstraps). That would leave a lot of breedable horses. How do you decide who to keep? I assume genes is a big part, keep who matches your gene goals. But to get to triple star, pt 15+ how do you decide who is worth using as a breeder?
I'm currently breeding bootstrap horses and creating a big show herd. If I have a stud producing *gold fillies from foundation mares, should I only use the *golds and cull the others? Once I'm getting 13 pt should they be **gold? So many questions, I'm not going to list them all, however I would love as much information about your process/thoughts behind culling vs keeping as a breeder.
Thanks in advanced <3Thanked by 1Summervine -
Ooh I love these questions, okay so!
Currently with my higher PT horses, I’m not keeping anything that’s less than 13 PT. I’m working up to more **golds from various stallion combos still, but I have a bunch from a couple of boys. When it came to who to double boost, or even boost, it was based on genes and lineage. My double boosted boy is the son of my fav archived stallion, who I bred to a double boosted mare for the purpose of keeping his son as the next herd sire to my breeding program. I have offspring of single boosted horses I will be maxing boosting and cloning due to wanting their genes. I’m more sentimental than most people probably are so my lines are littered with favorite horses- my next double boosts are coming from two unboosted stallions who I love and want to bring up to the rest of my high PT line.
If you have bunches of *gold horses, I would stop using anything lower, unless there’s a gene or a horse you really want in your lines. Not all 13+ PT will be **gold, but you want to keep working up that way. Maxing your fav mares is a good idea, so you can get the best breeding ability from themContinuing my reign as the most annoying player on the forums and hgg’s favorite butch lesbian cowboy

Does consistency play a factor for you? Or do you just modify to consistent?
-
Nope it doesn’t play a factor for me. I’ll modify it if I care, but as far as I know it’s mostly random so I don’t think it matters much for breeding. I keep inconsistent 13+ show horses anyway cause they still can do well, so I don’t usually bother to modify most of themContinuing my reign as the most annoying player on the forums and hgg’s favorite butch lesbian cowboy

From Mesa I learned that consistency is inherited. A players best in pasture failed sba while others passed because of too much inconsistency in the line.
However for bootstrapping it probably doesn't matter as horses aren't tested -
Do we know what determines * vs **? I know it's a numbers game somewhere for breeding ability (ok, I don't know that but I am assuming)...
If you have horses throwing **gold do you cull the *gold? Or if their pt is high enough do you keep them, as breeders? -
Okay. So this is a fun topic that never ends. The short story is:pt doesn’t matter for now. What you want is to get your stock as quickly as possibly to the breeding cap. The breeding cap is somewhere between star* and star**. (There are probably 10 levels between the first star and double boosted. I haven’t counted so don’t judge me on it, lmao)
Bootstrap horses aren’t tested not because of PT or inconsistency but because we boost above the natural breeding cap of the game. The natural breeding cap will only allow PTs of around 14(can be tempered with cloning)to be produced. Anything above that comes from a parent that is above the breeding cap. The higher the paper grade, the higher the PT a particular horse can produce. That’s why we need double boosting to hit that sweet PT cap of 15 pt. (Double boosted horses are 10% above the breeding cap) foals born to 2 double boosted horses will be at the breeding cap or near (1% diff normally). So if you try to compare a horse above the breeding cap, to a foal that hasn’t been boosted, the foal is guaranteed to fail.
I personally never boost anything that isn’t at the breeding cap. Now that Max is a thing my horses get maxed/consistent/checked for breeding cap and then finally allowed to enter my lines. The only caveat would be if your herd isn’t at the breeding cap yet. You can boost to hit it faster.
I would be happy to sell you a stud at the breeding cap to test against for create price.
I might have to take a deep dive into that thread on Mesa if I have some time. Something is fishy with it. I’m assuming it’s on the forums?
-
@SolandisStables anything that’s below my currently breeding levels I keep to show, not breed. Which is why I am not keeping anything under 13- because they’ll eventually move to showing. So any horses with lower papers that are under 13 get thrown in auction, anything 13 or above gets kept for showingContinuing my reign as the most annoying player on the forums and hgg’s favorite butch lesbian cowboy

And I would love a stud to test against <3 -
how tot you determine breeding cap ?

I've never worried about consistency because I make all of my breeding stock perfectly consistent. ^_^ We'll see how it affects my bad breeders. -
@ExclusiveAcres for years it has been comparison testing everything(spending tons of money) to find right where it sits.
Now we can take any two horses double boosted above the cap, max out their foal, and they will be at the breeding cap.
Then compare to your stock. I sell breeding cap studs for testing for create price. :) -
Is 13.9 the natural breeding cap and 15.3 the cap for double boosted?
Without any boosts what is the highest pt achievable? -
As far as I know 14 pt is the highest I’ve seen not boosted. I thought 13.9 was the highest but there’s been a few that hit 14. Also you can adjust with cloning.
15 pt is the pt cap. You can get over it during the cloning process. (15.3 is the highest I’ve seen so far) When you clone a horse there is a chance that pt will go up or down. My last 20 double boosts, only 2 have been over 15 pt. ^_^
Without boosts 14 pt. Unless you get lucky and get more from cloning. Which can go up to .5 when below 15 pt. So possibly 14.5 if you got extremely lucky? -
I keep the double **Golds, and cull/spay the single *Golds
-
There is no actual PT cap, there is a breeding cap which we boost or double boost above, and the PT's are as high as they can produce
-
Thanks for the refresher, this post is just what I needed lol. I've been, more or less, away from the game for over a year now. Just been logging in here and there and breeding/showing at random.
Trying to bring back some young stock before all my stock ages out and cull what needs culling has had my mind running in circles. Boosting my boots has been no issue, but I don't have the ability to clone. It's been bugging me the past couple seasons, just knowing Ive forgotten need to know type info and not seeing any PTs higher than 14.5 from my boosted stock and descendants of the one stud I was able to double boost way back when. Reading thru this got me lined right out, thanks again! -
I don’t have the money to make my breeding plan how I want it at the moment, I REALLY want to make some high Blue/A foundation matings… so I could potentially end up with G2 Gold/Stars… but right now I’m creating G3 Gold/Stars naturally with no boosts (from Blue/A foundies). I get 1-2 per season. That gives me steady G4 Gold/Stars, and G5 HIGH Gold/Star. My G6s are ** Gold/Stars. I’m hitting 12.0PT by G4, and won’t keep any Bootstrap stock under 13.2PT personally. I’ll make a big sweep and cull for 13.4PT coming up soon.ID# 24891

Question: make sure I understand; if breeding double boosted horses, for a boosted line, it would look like this?
Foundation horse, Red paper, add 5% boost
Clone Foundation, max, add 5% boost
Breed
Max foal, take a sup foal, add 5% boost
Clone foal add 5% boost
And repeat process
Is that correct? -
Yea. Just make sure to max/make consistent everywhere if you can. Reminder that you pt can go up, down, or stay the same during the cloning process.
-
@SolandisStables yes that's double boosted, personally I only use it on the horses right on the breeding cap to get those breeding horses producing the 15+PTs, but I've seen people use it on low gen/foundation horses to get to max in least amount on generations possible. Depends on your goals
-
So according to Ammit in that Mesa forum discussion that someone linked above, consistency DOES play a role, although I get a ton of inconsistants that pass SBA in my lower lines so it's definitely not the biggest factor. That said, I know that consistency is inheritable so I only keep consistent horses in my breeding program therefore all of my inconsistent horses come from consistent parents so that might be part of it. They're probably slightly inconsistent rather than horribly inconsistent. It won't affect their breeding ability but it's does affect their show ability, and now after reading that Mesa discussion I see that it would affect who would pass SBA in some way.
For me, all of my lines are being bred with the goal of eventually getting them into the star/gold territory and producing foals with high PT scores so I can keep those who aren't good enough to breed as show horses. As such, I always look at the consistency with the knowledge in mind that it doesn't actually affect their breeding ability (other than the fact that inconsistent horses are more likely to produce inconsistent foals). If you are going to be spending the IVs or money to boost or double boost, it's definitely worth the GMT to make the horse consistent and the 5 GMTs to max them as well. -
Is maxing clones a thing?
Clones are considered foundations so I'm not sure of maxing is a reasonable thing to do.
Example:
High pt bootstrapped foal is maxed and cloned. The clones pt comes out higher. Is it worth using 5 gmts to max? Is it better to make perfectly consistent? Or both?
I'm learning so much! Thank you all! -
You can't max the clone of a maxed horse.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

Can you max a clone of an unmaxed horse?
Still learning :D -
I max clones out of maxed horses all the time. If their pt drops during cloning it will return them to the original.
boost t3 10643056 -
Speaking of maxing and all. What effect does 1% boost have vs 5% and vs it to maxing?
Example: Red papered foundation with a pt of 9.6
If a 1% boost is used what will the horse have both paper and pt wise? And same with 5% boost?
If the horse is maxed what will the effect be?
I hope this question makes sense -
"I max clones out of maxed horses all the time"
The game will let you sometimes but it is an utter waste of your tokens. A clone of a maxed horse will never get any better at breeding than the original maxed horse. You are burning your tokens for no reason.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. What I do with my bootstraps is, most of the time I SBA all boys (and none make it, because I mostly use *** boys). The exception is if I am looking for a new stud, then I will use the one I like the looks of, and max and boost him. For mares, I keep all ** mares intact. Any below that needs to be superior to their dam to remain intact.ID 108
