Streamlining the breeding process. Question
  • It's been quite a long time since I have played this game in earnest, with some major life changes causing me to quit for a while, and when I came back nearly everything had changed and has continued to change. So the way I used to play is not possible anymore. The main thing that changed that was the pasture breeding dropdown selection going away.
Here's what I used to do:
I would name my horses according to their generation, paper level, and genes. For example, a foundation yellow mare would start "1C" followed by the ID number or name, followed by the letters of the gene code. Some of the extra genes I came up with a key for so I had something different to represent all of them. That way, when I went into the pasture, I could select my stallion, and then go through my mares by generation and multiple select the ones with the genes that I wanted to pair with that stallion. That way I could get all 50 mares for each stallion imported to the pasture in one go, and each month's breeding would get done super fast.
Now, I can't seem to figure out a simple and efficient way to do this. Naming by gene took the most time out of that old process, and I don't think there is a point in it anymore because I haven't found that having the genes in the name is useful in the new breeding process.
I am looking for recommendations on how people are doing it now.

P.S. I am sure there is a good way now, and it's probably quite simple, but I just can't seem to wrap my brain around transitioning from one way to the other.

  • If you make a barn for one gen, you can select that entire barn and move them into a pasture. That’s probably going to be the easiest way. Edit to say that you can now use the search to select in a single barn (if you have multiple generations there) to quickly select them instead of selecting by hand. But this can only be done one barn at a time.

My barns are a mess so I search 25 at a time, open and import from their page. Takes too long but a lot quicker than keeping barns optimized since I have too many horses and hate sorting.

However there is now a limit on how many foals can be produced on each pasture every year so make sure to take a look at that.

  • Also, I don’t remember when this was added, but using the breeding lab for straws/eggs now has a 15 day pasture bonus added.

If you have a set of mares you want 30 days breeding bonus, they no longer lose their bonus when removed from pasture until daily rollover. So you can pull them out, breed another set, and then put the first one back.

We also now have a max ability, which will give the top available paper/showing ability the parents can produce. It does cost 5 gmts.
  • I haven't actually worked out how to manage the mares and stallions in pastures easily. I think the best way is to have your barns super organised so you can sort within the barns and move them that way, as we can now move horses from the search as long as they are in the same barn

  • I used to play that way too and it was a huge adjustment for me. It required me to completely change my barns around since they never had to be organized before. Now I keep each line in a separate barn then go into the barn and search it for which generation I want to breed and move all the horses from that gen into the pasture. I do think it's more work at the beginning while you're doing the heavy lifting of reorganizing everything, but using the search function in the barn helps me a lot and once you have things organized in the barns it shouldn't be too much more difficult than the old way.

  • Thanks all. I kind of always wanted to go for the barn organization method even back before everything changed, so I guess it's time to invest in some barns!

  • I still name all of mine by generation and have genes marked at the end. That way you can sort by name and grab all of the ones of a certain gen in that barn.
You can either have multiple barns all nicely sorted, or one big barn of mares (I used to use a 1000 stall, before I got a ton of pastures to sort them into). Otherwise I found it easiest to just try to maintain barn organization so you could know that all the gen 1 and gen 2 are in this barn and you can easily sort them by their naming scheme to grab the ones you want to put in pasture.
