How does one decide on which stallions to keep?
-
I have close to 500 stallions and no way for me to use them all. How does one choose which ones they keep? Some of mine have no name and I am frustrated because I don't know where to start with containing this down.
Is there anyone that might want to help me decide which lines to keep? I have from foundations to 7g stallions now. -
Running them through SA or SBA is a good start. For me if they pass SBA I then decide if they will fit any of my current breeding programs. If not they get snipped and added to my show herd or I may toss them in an auction and see if they sell. The ones I like I will compare to their sire and I want to see them be at least as good as, but I prefer superior to.

Here are my steps:
A) gotta pass SBA
B) gotta test AGA my benchmark for each given generation (I primarily breed even gens)
C) gotta have the genes I'm after for that line. If he doesn't have them, can they be GMTd from his parents?
D) how many studs so I have for that line in that generation? Do I like him more or less than others? If I find I'm not using a stallion by the time he's 6 or 7, I obviously don't like him as much as a different stallion.
So yeah! That's the basics of my process for gelding all my intact colts.ID# 25784 -
Honestly? If I ever get to the point where I have so many that going through would be a pain, I just geld EVERYTHING without a name. Every single one. Without even looking at them. Then I just start fresh with the next breeding season. Obviously I can live without them if they have just been sitting in my barn for so long so snip snip!Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

So should I start with my star stallions first and then go down the line? I don't have as many star stallions.

I keep almost all of them as show horses .. I test ba/ or SBA and cull that way.. someone months I have only kept over a certain Pt and auctioned the rest
