Introducing Stallion Futurities!
-
This June for the seventeenth anniversary of HAJ we will be hosting our very first stallion futurity.
HAJ tends towards walled gardens. Often people don't do a lot of sharing of lines. There is nothing wrong with this inherently but it is always nice to see flashy stallion ads and the culture that immerges around particularly well-promoted stallions. To help encourage members to promote and share their stallions I have created this brand-new LB category.
Here are the rules:
To qualify for the futurity a stallion must have at least 10 offspring bred and owned by players other than the owner of the stallion.
Those offspring must be the same era as the stallion, and must be five years of age.
The total number of points won by the top ten offspring of each qualified stallion count towards his futurity standings.
The number shown next to the stallion name is the sum of the points earned this year by his top 10 offspring.
Stallions do not need to be entered in era clubs to qualify for the futurity.
Note that stallions and their offspring do not need to be in the era clubs which means futurities are open to fantasy horses.
Because of how the futurities work you promote your stallion several months in advance. In this first case, you would promote in February in hopes that the five-year-olds in June rack up the most points for your era.
Prizes for futurities are significant:
Champion: 10 GMTs to the stallion owner, and 1 GMT to the owner of each of his 10 best foals.
Reserve Champion: 8 GMTs, and 1 GMT to the owner of each of his 10 best foals
Third Place: 8 GMTs
Fourth Place: 6 GMTs
Fifth Place: 4 GMTs
Ribbons to 10th place.
The first set of futurity awards go out June 28th. Then every month thereafter.
_____
An important note. If you know you are the kind of person who is going to want to obsessively quality-check the descendants of your stud, and get flustered if the lines are not to your standards please do not stand your stallions to the public. It just stresses out everyone involved. It is not fair to yourself, the people who use your stud, or me who has to deal with the fallout. Know yourself and know what you are signing up for if you stand your stallion. Stallion rules are not permitted for any stud listed on the public boards or the forums. Lower-quality offspring of a stallion does not negatively impact him on the leaderboard, or for the futurities. Just be chill with it, or know that if you can't you will be happier keeping to your own garden.
A lowest PT LB category is also coming soon if you wish to start up a low PT project in earnest now that is no longer financially punished.Reminder: please do not post stallion ads before the 28th

I also want to point out that the competition is "points at 5 years old". It is not uncommon for high PT horses not to have a lot of points by this age. Don't be discouraged from promoting your stallions that are not top producers on the LB. There is frankly no way to know which stallion's offspring will land at lucky levels and nab the most points. I am guessing these will prove to be rewarding for stallions at all ability levels.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. At the moment, yes, but I will see what actual numbers we get and adjust as needed. It will need to be at minimum 10 though if not 25.Need to contact me? Read this first. I’d never paid any attention to eras before… can someone please explain them to me, what they mean, and how they are relevant; or toss me a link that will explain it?Thanked by 1Summervine

@BoredCowgirl Here is a wiki article about them.

I'd love to make a suggestion if possible? I see the rewards are significant, it would be great if the breeder of the stallion was rewarded as well. I certainly gave away / sold many older stallions during gift exchange and holidays, which are now near the top or top of the futurities at present.
Also, what about stallions that are clones? How does that fit in?
For example, a stallion is a clone, and so is "bred by" Hijinc University. Would all of his offspring be different than his owner?

Maybe clones shouldn't qualify? With so many clones being clones of boosted horses and boosted again as a clone, I can see bootstrapped cloned studs having a higher chance at this LB than regular foundation horses.Thanked by 1Summervine
-
I don't think the breeder of the stallion should get anything to be honest. They are not the one doing the promoting of the stud, and as I said above I have no reason to think this will just be another "best producing" lb. It will be rather random.
It does not matter if the stallion is a clone. The owner of the stallion counts not the breeder. Cloned offspring do not qualify for the stallion's score because of that, but there is zero reason to bar cloned studs.
Boosting already imparts an era penalty so this is already accounted for and will not have any impact. Again as I said above there is no reason to think this will be just a clone of the top producer list. Raw breeding ability should not play a huge factor here.

How will it be even for a foundation c stud (meeting all requirements) vs a star stud (meeting all requirements)? I'm asking for knowledge as I am very much learning :D if this LB goes based off foals earning points then is breeding ability out the window and only showing matters? And then inconsistent vs consistent would be a focus?Thanked by 1Summervine
-
First of all those two studs would never compete. It is divided up by eras. I don't think inconsistent versus consistent will play a factor. Yes the foal breeding ability does not mater for this at all. This celebrates producing great show horses not just raw skill like the best producer list.Need to contact me? Read this first. Does a stallion have to be living? Do posthumous offspring count?Thanked by 1Summervine

You do not own stallions that are not alive so they do not count. Dead foals can't earn points so don't count.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

Oh interesting. I know, typically, my 10-11 pt horses seem to gather points at faster levels than my 13+ pt horses so it’ll be interesting to see if that hypothesis is correct. By 5 years old is going to be luck based so should give everybody a good shot at it.
A lot of times my inconsistent horses are also the top of my point earners. So I’m interested to see if that’s true for other people/if these horses can get lucky enough to earn enough points.
I’m think I’m gonna have to try and get low pts though. I can’t seem to get my pts to go down ^_^ that’ll be the hard one. I’m extremely pleased that fantasy genes aren’t excluded in this one like regular eras.
This whole thing will be extremely fascinating and I’m super excited to see how it all goes down. Thank you so much for creating these fun events for us to have.
I’m definitely going to try and breed to every stud people are offering and keeping a show pony. Should be interesting. ^_^ -
I really think "breed to mine and I will breed to yours" will be the way most people get on the board. Which is great! Because it encourages breeding and keeping show ponies and working together. :x

With the addition of futurities, it seems like the ability to sort by era would be useful in searches. I know that we can search by ears, but I don’t think we have the ability to sort by era.
-
I am not sure why you would need such a sort to be honest. If you are looking for a certain era or a range of eras you can already do that.Need to contact me? Read this first. As Ammit says, you can search by Eras and I just have. Just put the Era equal to what you're looking for (ie Era = 10) and only those horses of Era 10 will pop up.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

If the original breeder of a foal sells it to another player(who is not the stallion owner) will the foal still be counted or do they need to be owned by the person that bred them?

I know there is a post somewhere on bluegrass about formatting fancy stallion ads… is there one over here that we can get a link to?
-
I think this is a fantastic new feature, I tend to just do my own thing and breed my own lines, but this really encourages more participation in the community. I might have to do some stallion ads!
-
Do these 10 offsprings need to be owned by 10 different players? Or do they all 10 count if they are all owned by one owner that's not the stallion owner?
If they have to be owned by 10 different players, if one player that's not stallion owner breeds 10 offsprings and sells them to 9 other players, does that count as 10 players? Or does it only count if those 10 players bred them themselves.
I'm asking because there is a stallion I'm eyeing who has licenses I don't have. If a friend breeds to him and sends me a speld, will the foal i have count for his futurity? -
@rlazyBRanch I don't see anything in the rules Ammit posted that the foals have to be owned or breed by 10 different players, just that they are bred and owned by someone not the stallion owner. Ammit has said the foals don't need to be owned by the person who bred them.
As long as the friend doesn't own the stallion in question, that foal should count for the futurity. If the friend does own the stallion you're eyeing, the foal won't count, since the foal will have been bred by the stallion owner.
Does that help?~Purveyor of the finest riding horses in Rakia~

So technically this is only open to stallions that are 12 years old or younger this month (January), since those are the only stallions that are guaranteed to still be alive come June, correct? Or can we use a stallion that is older than 12 this year, since he will have been alive during at least part of the time the foals are growing up?
-
If the stallion passes, it looks like he is out of the running.
-
AmmitAmmit Jan 25, 2023 12:22 AM
You do not own stallions that are not alive so they do not count. Dead foals can't earn points so don't count. -
Only 12 year old (In January) stallions or younger are guaranteed to be alive (since they will be 17 in June), but older stallions may still be eligible if they are still alive. So if they die, they don't count, but not all horses die after their 17th year.
It was confirmed in the General Hangout chat a few days ago:
"Ammit has said that straw breeding counts, and that the sire must both be still alive and a stallion when the offspring are five. Ammit will have to weigh on the age, but it seems reasonable to me that a 24 yo horse with 5 year old offspring (from the last season of live cover) would qualify for futurities, so it would then make sense for a 26 yo horse with 5 year old offspring to qualify, again assuming that the stallion is still alive."~Purveyor of the finest riding horses in Rakia~

So foals need to be bred by a different player than stallion owner? For example a stallion owner sell foals they have bred by their stallion that don’t meet their goals for whatever reason, but are still nice horses, do those foals count in futurity since stallion owner bred them but someone else owns them?Hidden Creek Farms # 31285

For Fantasy - Not all genes are available for stud. Will this be changing? If you don't have the license, you can't breed to it anyway. Or would we buy straws?
