Is this filly homozygous for DP?
-
She's out of a Freaky Friday mare so I know she has at least one copy of DP. Her sire doesn't look like he carries DP so I would guess that she's heterozygous but she does look awfully dark so maybe she's homozygous and her sire does carry DP? It'd be so much simpler if het vs homo DP in bays and browns changed their appearance as much as it does for the chestnuts. :)

Memory's mother is black, so I'm pretty sure Memory is DP dp. I can't decide if I think your Magic is darker or not.....it may be easier to tell when she ages up.
This girl is possibly DP DP (Sire is homozygous DP, mom is a het DP liver chestnut.)

She seems a little more mahogany brown on her belly than Memory. -
All 3 look Homozygous DP. The difference in the coloring of the belly is because of the Pangare gene. pp - no pangare, Pp or pP - one pangare gene, or PP - Homozygous for Pangare. Pangare makes a yellowish coloring under the armpits and belly, lower legs, and also near the muzzle of the face. These horses are so dark, it doesn't really show like it does on chestnuts and lighter bays, and only Bold Memory has one active gene, the other two have pp, which means no pangare, and the reddish coloring of the belly is just the natural "lighting" of the underside, as most animals have.
