Need a second pair of eyes
  • Ok, so went through my foals. Been culling really hard because I have too many mares as is. Have been upping my requirements (Such as, I really need to get 2g population under control, so I won't keep them unless they are papered blue or something) My requirements are doing great, and I have already culled to about 10% my original crop, but there are a few that don't meet these requirements that I am just having a hard time with snipping. Need second opinions on wether their quality really demands snipping or not to be a responsible breeder. I think I already know the answer on some of them, just need to hear someone say it.

  • I am so tempted to just call him 2g and keep on the search for A and Blue horses for the "next gen" That is if he comp taste against his sire well though.

  • And I already have red three g mares and blue 5g, I just have been leaning away from keeping foals like that...

  • They are gorgeous.
  • LOL! Wildland, sounds like you're trying to talk yourself into something?!

  • If you are consistently getting blues at gen 3 and golds at gen 5, then I would snip these girls. If you aren't, I don't see any major problem in holding onto them for the moment but planning to snip them once your numbers of higher papered mares come up enough.

I personally would snip the colt. There are too many good colts that paper higher than him at that gen to keep a B 3 even if he is Snowflake. There's always next season! But, my culling policies always were quite harsh...he's super cute and you can always hold him intact for the moment and see if you don't get something better next season.

  • Wildland, if you are going to snip the silver grullo rabicano mare I would buy her from you instead if you are interested in selling.

I would be tempted to keep them all for the time being and phase them out when I ran out of room, but I have decided to be a little more lax on culling lately. I'm trying out just breeding paper level to paper level and ignoring generations matching. So I'm not being strict about certain paper levels at a particular generation. If a mare papers equal to or better than parents I'll keep them. Studs have to be equal or better and comparison test well.

  • Ok, thanks friends. The three 3g got snipped. I really knew I had no business keeping the snowflake intact, especially since I have an A papered half brother of his, just don't know if he has snowflake, but he has a 2/3 change of being a carrier.

I haven't achieved gold yet, so grulla filly got to stay intact. Salvistar, I might be willing to sell if you want her.

  • It's up to you. If you want to keep her intact go for it and keep her. If you want to cull her I'll take her off your hands. :)

  • That second colt is super cute, and my personal favorite color for Appys! Love me some classic champagnes with spots! I hope he's a carrier for you.
  • Thanks. He looks just like his mother. :)
