Chimera breeding?
-
Silly question:
If you breed two horses that each have chimera (brindle), will the offspring also be chimera?
I get that the inheritance of individual genes is more complicated, I’m just curious about the chimerism itself.
Is it ever possible for a non-chimera horse to spontaneously have a chimera offspring?
Thanks!
( I managed to get two Blackest Night creates from the Herd Helper forum and I’m wondering how best to use my pretty horses) -
Chimera is......wierd. 2 Chimera horses are not in any way guaranteed a chimera foal. Chimera is almost random it seems sometimes. You can absolutely get a chimera foal from non chimera parents. Here is a spreadsheet I have been working on for a while. I took a break for a couple of months but plan to start it back up this breeding season.

I would theorize (from my genetic knowledge from dog breeding) that breeding 2, both with chimera, would give you more like 75 percent chance. It does say at the bottom of the color results (if you tested) that it's a 50/50 chance of inheritance. But you can flip a coin and get heads 10 times in a row. Genetics are like that

@VorpalAlice
I am very impressed. Your spreadsheet is amazing.
Are you looking to collect data from other players, or just yourself to keep things from getting messy? -
@Walywoohoo The 50/50 chance is for which of the two DNA strands will contribute to the foal, not passing on the chimera trait.
@Bayleaf I would be thrilled to collect data from other players as long as it includes all the needed info. I have currently been only breeding chimera to chimera, but I would like to start getting data on non chimera parents producing chimeras, and results for when one parent is and one isn't. I would also like info on chimeras made via merge, but I know there are a lot fewer of them. I was planning on starting a whole new spreadsheet this season anyway, so the timing is kind of perfect.
The info I would need is:
How many horses were bred total (broken down to studs and mares)
How many were chimera
How many were lined chimeras (any history of chimera in the line counts)
How many total foals
How many chimera foals.
I would also like links to chimera foals produced -
Ohhhh ok, that makes sense! But is a bummer haha

Ok, so the way that this game works is that a chimeric horse has a 50% chance of passing on strand one, or a 50% chance of passing on strand two. Breeding a chimeric horse is difficult, and fairly rare, so most people don't have it as their goal. However breeding chimeric horses together does increase your chances of a chimeric foal. It is still rare, but just ever so slightly less rare (think like 0.01 to 0.02 for example, not real numbers lol)Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Walywoohoo brindle is genetic in dogs, it is mostly random in horses. Dogs have a clear gene for it, horses do not.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

I notice sometimes when a horse image is generating, it will say “testing for Chimerism” on a normal horse.
I wonder if that’s just flavor text or if it has any relationship to that individual horse’s chances of producing a chimeric offspring. -
It is just testing to see if there is a second strand of DNA it needs to generate.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

Ok, very interesting!
Obsidian I'll try to post my bred brindle's info. I didn't breed many yet, but it'll be a few numbers for your research ;) -
@Walywoohoo I haven't researched brindle, but Ammit has said in the past that that is how brindle inheritance has worked :)Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
