Hello! I am looking to gift some genes. I am trying to figure out the best way to do this. Do I need to buy them a specific horse and send it over with that gene?

I have bought some of the genes several times in the RSG.

Can I send over one of my current horses with a licensed gene (even if it is second gen) or do I need to send over a foundation with a new copy of the gene?

You must gift a licensed gene on a foundation before you can gift any lined stock.

You can add the gene to a foundation you own and then gift the horse via the Gift Exchange portal, or you can add the gene to a GMTable foundation your giftee owns (and remember to tell them you’ve added it when you reveal yourself, and to add this to your gifting notes).

Once they have received the license, you can send them lined stock with the gene.

Remember anyone can own spayed or gelded ponies with any gene, regardless of license status. Shiny show ponies for everybody!!!

Editing to add—it doesn’t have to be a brand new copy of the gene. If you owned two foundations with, for instance, Watercolor, already that you added to them back in March, you could gift one of those, or even both. But remember that if you gift all of YOUR copies of a license, you can no longer breed or own breedable horses with that gene. You can check to see how many copies you own of any given license on your stable home page.

Second copy of a gene you add to a horse that only has one copy. If you mean you have 2 licenses for a particular gene and want to gift one in the exchange, the only way to do that is to give the horse via the gifting portal after the 15th. They will then own one copy of a gene license and you will own one less copy of said license.

It's the second situation. I have double licenses for a few things, and I'm trying to figure out how to put them onto a horse, can this only be done via horses that the gene is already on?

@4laska you can not "put" a license on a horse. Licenses are separate from genes on horses. You can only put a gene on a horse and that can only be done in the RGS sale or the GMT lab.

If I did give away my last copy of a license, what would happen? I have one that I’m not super interested in breeding anymore and would theoretically like to give the foundie to my giftee, but I know I have remnants of that gene scattered in my herd, some of which I wanted to keep for other reasons. How can I work with that? Is there a way to buy a copy of the license without needing to put the gene on a horse? Does it automatically snip everything intact that has that gene if I no longer have the license? Or is there a way to keep using what I already have without buying new stuff or wait to breed it until I get another copy? I’m not sure exactly what the details are surrounding that or what possible options are.

That's a lot of rapid-fire qustions lol.

If you give away your last copy you will simply be unable to buy or breed that gene. Nothing happens to your horses you just can't breed them. The only way you can gift licenses you already own is to gift it on a foundation horse. You would have to gift them a foundation with that gene.

I’m wondering if a clone of your foundation with the genes you want to give away would work?

ExampleI I have 28 licenses for the chinchilla gene. I clone one of my Hom chinchilla mares and gift the clone to my (hypothetical) giftee. Would that work, leaving me with 26 licenses?

No clones won't transfer the liscneses.

Cloning does not give you a license so having a clone or not is irrelevant. If you have two copies of a gene license and give away a foundation with that gene then you transfer one copy. You would have one copy then. :)
