*Opinion* Does it bother you when Giftees rename gifts?
-
Curious about this today as I have been organizing barns. Does it bother you when your giftee renames a pony you have gifted?
For that matter, does it bother you when a buyer renames a horse you've sold them?
I know a lot of people put a lot of time and thought into names on their ponies, and a lot of other people just randomly generate names. I know the "official" rule is that a seller (and, I'm assuming, gifter) is not allowed to put any restrictions on how the new owner is to use a pony, including names etc. But I was curious how people feel about it anyway.
For me personally, I don't mind on either one. Once someone else owns the horse it's theirs and they're welcome to name it whatever makes then happy. I guess if someone takes a named horse I've sold and changes their name to their ID number or an obvious organizer name like "Boot 153 lplp", it bugs me just slightly because it feels almost like selling a pet and seeing it come up in a slaughter auction as just a number later on... if that makes sense? But so far I haven't run into this too much. Mostly just once, when I accidentally sold a stud I was planning on using because I set the stud fee in the sales box by accident. He's been resold and set as a generic name. :( But overall I'm usually of the opinion that if you find a name you prefer then I'm fine with it.
However.
On the purchasing side of things I'm really careful to leave named horses with a name that is as close as possible to what they already had once I put on my organizer tags. I always add SHOW to show ponies and sometimes the whole name doesn't fit anymore, but I try to keep it as true to the name they had as possible. If they had an "organizer" name originally or just their ID number, then I name them whatever I want.
Anybody else have a strategy for names? Anyone have opinions on this? Do you feel differently when it comes to GE ponies? -
It's not a gift if it comes with strings and expectations attached. :)

I change the name of any I'm gifting to just their base number.
If I'm buying a lined horse that's been named i usually keep the name but change the prefix. If the horse I'm buying just has a number, i either name based on parents or use the random generator.

Typically only my fancy foundations/fancy bootstraps have names and Even then it’s rare.
My even lines I only keep superior so they only get their generation tag unless they’re exactly what I breed for. If there was a way so that only superiors pass testing, or that I could more easily bulk test/spay any that aren’t superior I would use it on pretty much all my breeding stock that’s not bootstrap. For me I have too many horses to care about names. ^_^
Any horse I buy that is lined (rarely) will be reduced to a generation or bootstrap prefix and then their I’d # to keep everything simple. I’m not going to remember names on 11k horses. -
I often rename breeding stock so I know what pasture they'll be going to. And I agree with Ammit. It's not a gift if it has strings attached.HJ2, Forest Server Player ID#25193 - DoubleMash2 Sunalta (Main breed), Khan Chocloate line of Pura Raza Española, and *new* Kilkenners line of Irish Draft. I keep names from ones I buy sometimes because I will occasionally name nice horses, like a new sire or a really nice mare, so I like having something in their lines, but all my show horses and the rest are just numbered. I don't mind names leaving when I sell, but the thing that irks me (that I try not to mind because there's no reason to, but it still happens!) is when someone buys a nice mare that's clearly bootstrap and runs breeding advice anyways :((
I mean, maybe they just wanted them for show, but it still hurts a little, lol!
But it's a good practice in letting go things that are outside your control :))ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask! -
Well. When I buy anything, unless that breeder requests to NOT change the name, it doesnt do me any good to keep their original names. All my stock are named with gene codes, sire abbreviations, and info I use to mate pairs. I rename everything. As Ammit mentioned, gift or even an outright purchase, they're mine now. So I do as I wish unless they were sold with limitations or expectations.ID# 24891

Oooh I love everyone's thoughts on this. Maybe I just worry too much because my anxiety bleeds into everything. :D

I am a bit of a naming snob. I don't like to even tag a generation or Paper rank on the end of a name, but I do. I LOVE naming my ponies!
Once they are sold it would be nice if the new owner kept the name, if only to make the pedigree look better, but I don't really mind. Then again, I don't sell a whole lot of horses. The ones that go to auction usually just have ID#s, and Rank Special names.
ETA- I am referring to my SummertreeFarms account, on the Forest server, where I actually play the game. My mod-ding accounts are a different matter!

Once the horse leaves my barn I expect the new owner to have fun naming her/him. I love naming them, but so do others.IAM WolfDen #50695

I have a handful of GE gift mares that came with names, and my foundation studs get names. But everything in my barns get tagged with generation. I will use certain words in my show herd instead of the word generator to mark things. Like I have started any horse Cheers gives me from their giveaways has cheer in their name so I can see them easier in my geriatric barn.45120

I don’t care what they do about the name, but I have to say I love seeing my daffodil tattoo pop up on other people’s stock months later and knowing it’s one of my homebreds. I would never make it a condition of a sale or gift that they keep it, but it makes me very happy to see it later.
On the name side, I particularly like it if they do name their new ponies and actually put a little thought or some of their own personality/likes/fandoms into the new name.Thanked by 1KaschStables -
Oh, I love seeing my tattoo pop up in someone's lines. It makes me so happy seeing they have a horse they really like that mine contributed to in some way. :xID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I name everyone. I don't much care if any I sell get their names changed, they no longer belong to me.
Usually I'll have a gen tag and what they papered, if I comp tested them- the results, chimeras in the beginning of f a horses name something like- 3BSc- 3rd gen, blue, sup, chimera. I'll usually have part of the sires name and the good ol name generator finishes up. I used to go back thru and put gene tags on the end, but search has become my good buddy so not so much. If I buy one with a name I try to keep it as much as I can but still have to update my tags on it lol. -
Once the horse has left my barns, the buyer may do whatever they choose with it, from renaming to removing my tattoos.
I always rename, and it's extremely rare for me to remove the breeder's/former owner's tattoos.
As for my naming scheme, each horse has a prefix that tells me which line they belong to, what generation they are, comp test results, paper level, their ID number, if they were best in pasture and what year, and for stallions only they get a name if there are any character spaces left. Mares never get names, and show horses generally just get the prefix FF and their ID #Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free. -
I usually keep the names of the giftees. If I buy a horse and it is already named I keep them as is. I am working on my own gene code but it isn't very good yet.
-
Once I get better with my breeding program I'll have to come up with some kind of gene code.
-
I rename every horse I buy to fit my barn's system. I have only removed tattoos once or twice and it was just because the image made me uncomfortable. I've got no issues with others removing my tattoos or renaming. I've been meaning to make my own breeder's tattoo for real life years now and just haven't gotten around to it!ID 43830
It's nice to be back! :)

I name almost all ponies I create because I don't like the look of numbers, but they are just the silliest names that make 0 sense and I absolutely do not expect someone to keep a pony named "PonyKeyboardTornado" as such XXD
Once the horse is out of my barn, they can do what they want with said horse, it's all perfectly fine by me ::)ID: 53629 I collect small heavy boned horsesThanked by 1Lallyhop -
