Breeding question
  • When comparing my goals. Should I be culling the ones that are as good as their sire/dam? <— I feel like it would make sense too but I’m not sure. I am attempting to see how far I can build up my own lines with just foundations.
  • If your goal is to improve the quality of your horses with each generation, then yes, you should geld/spay foals that test AGA and only keep the superior ones intact. The best use of AGA horses (and ones neutered by BA/SBA) is as show horses to make money to support your breeding herd. :D

  • It also depends on how many you're getting. So for example at higher gens you might have a harder time keeping intacts, so depending on your goals, you might only keep superior colts but end up keeping some of your AGA fillies if they have genes you want. But yeah, if you want to be as strict as possible, if you can manage keeping only superiors, it's definitely the way to encourage growth.

  • You have to remember that it is about as good as. This means some may be slightly worse, some may be the same and some may be slightly better. It takes a bit of testing to figure out sometimes, but it's definitely doable. For example, i have had foals test AGA but i know the foal is better because of paper level. I have had foals test AGA as the parent but is slightly better because they are AGA a horse that is superior to the parent.

I keep Superior colts only, but i keep AGA fillies if they fit the paper and color requirement for that generation of that line.
