I recently finished painting a Breyer and I'm so Proud!
-
I got into Breyer painting as a hobby about a year ago and pretty much learned by mistakes. I just completed this little fellow, my first from-scratch model as well as the smallest! He is a Tennessee walker Stablemates model that I painted as a splash chestnut. Every part is handpainted by me!Thanked by 1WolfgangPride

Pretty!
I love painting model horses, but mostly paint Breyers myself. I personally have a decent collection of Breyers, Peter Stones, resins, and more (most being OF (original finish; not painted by someone outside the factory). I also have a collection of dogs, cats, sharks, and carousels. :)Love,
Chase ♡Thanked by 1RiverMeadows -
Great job, RiverMeadows! He's beautiful.
Keep painting, make more mistakes, and end up with gorgeous models!
I got into this a couple of years ago too and I also learn by making mistakes.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.Thanked by 1RiverMeadows -
Oh boy! I make stablemate sized tack! It's tedious work getting all the teeny tiny details. He's very handsome. Great job!#28036Thanked by 1RiverMeadows

@Haltanny ohh I can't even imagine, this guy was so small. I would love to see some of them!
I feel like most people here would have some Breyers at least, I have like 75 at this point, some inherited from my mom. More now that I paint old ones off ebay. -
I have a few Breyers myself, though I only paint my schleich horses, but I keep running out of Apple Barrel Paint, since that seems to work best for them.Thanked by 1RiverMeadows

All of the customizers (on Facebook) swear by Liquitex or Golden. After I did those sea ponies last year, one of the customizers said that even if all I get is a high-quality white, I'll see a marked difference in the ease of application and of the final product. I've been using cheap craft paints from the fabric store, but as I run out of them I'll be replacing them with more expensive paints, as I feel that I am ready to work my way up.
RiverMeadows asked to see some of Haltanny's horses, I'll post a couple of mine.
All hand-brushed acrylic.
Lille Regnbue: this is the first one I ever completed, a Stablemate Draft Mare.
Reed Before the Wind: This was a commission piece, on the Stablemate Standing ASB mold.
Amphitrite and Triton (Sea Ponies): Inspired partly by ChevalStables (aka MamaMiaStables) and partly by last June's Sea Pony create spree. Formerly a mare and foal from the Pony Gals collection, as far as I know. I never did get them positively identified.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.Thanked by 1RiverMeadows -
@FolliesFantasies They look great, I especially love the sea ponies! what did you use for the mane and tails? I agree about the higher quality materials, I use Windor&Newton acrylics. They are great for creating layers because the paint is very thin and allows me to create a smooth finish with blending. But, they are very thin and it can take forever to build up color over a white base. Also, for very subtle blending or shading, I use soft or hard pastels. Dappling is so much easier with pastels!Thanked by 1FollysFantasies

The foal's mane is cotton ball, shredded, then saturated with the green paint and left to dry. The mare is strips of plastic garbage bag (yellow, entirely by accident, but I love the color effect I ended up with) cut into strips and then gently stretched. Holding the strip with the length parallel to my spine, I pinched each side of the strip and gently stretched in a direction parallel to the floor.
Since this photo was taken, I've gone back and added a gloss overcoat to the manes and tails, and they look much better (wetter LOL).
I have these guys in progress, I was hoping to have them ready to paint for NaReViMo in August, but now that I'm back to work I'm exhausted, so not sure if I'll meet my goal. They are traditional-scale Clydesdale foals, transitioning into pegasi. On the first, I am just adding wings, but I got really ambitious with the second, and am going for "scratching foal with wing awkwardly outstretched."Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.Thanked by 1RiverMeadows -
I will try to find and post pictures of my painted models later. I have a lot of customs, but surprisingly less are painted by me! I often give my custom models to my grandmother.Love,

I can't seem to find pictures of my stablemate pieces, but i also do schleich tack. My favorite piece being a pack saddle and harness. I hand carved popsicle sticks to the size and shape for the wooden pack saddle parts. I believe i have posted it and a few other things in the FB group before, but i'll see if i can find any pics to share.#28036Thanked by 1RiverMeadows
