Question For Bootstrappers!
  • I see horse notes where people will write something like "AGA (x horse) -2%"
How do you figure out which percentage (better or worse) one horse is compared to another horse?

  • Lots and lots of comparison testing, note keeping and some guestimations. If you keep up on it every generation, you can have a fair idea what percentages your horses are based on how they compare to known percentages. For example, perfect foundation is 100%, exceptional is 105%, boosted exceptional is 110%, etc. If Horse A tests Superior to a known 110%, you know he is better than 110%. If Horse B is AGA Horse A but also AGA the 110%, you know he is better than 110% but not quite as high as Horse A, so maybe 112ish(?). Since Horse A is AGA Horse B, he's got to be closeish, so maybe
115ish(?). I don't know what the ranges are but surely someone else can chime in with that. Going forward, a horse that is AGA Horse A and Superior to Horse B would be just a few percentage points higher at most, and so on and so forth.

  • Oh I didn't know it was possible to figure that out like that! That's super cool.

  • Lots of benchmark horses at specific numbers, but there is guesswork. You can have a pretty good feel, but I'm still working on my mares. It's expensive, but really worth it if you want really high quality. It will greatly reduce the number of horses that pass SBA at higher generations, however. Especially if you only keep the highest percentage at each generation. It's a challenge, but fun. :)

  • I admit, I use this more on my even lines right now than on my bootstrap, but some of my star even boys have tested very well even against bootstrap studs.

  • I know I make those -2% notes, not sure how many other people do too. Tried to shortly explain via PM.

  • @DreamyMeadows I am interested in your answer as well. I don’t bootstrap on this account but I do on Bluegrass, and am always looking for tips and ideas.
  • Ok, so if anyone is interested in how you might work out a system to measure specific increases in quality, this is how I do it:

Start with the stud (we'll call him Stud 1) you believe to be the lowest in quality. Find a colt who tests superior (we'll call him Stud 3). Then, find a colt (Stud 2) who tests as good as Stud 1 and Stud 3. Since Stud 3 is superior to Stud 1, we can infer that Stud 2 is between Stud 1 and Stud 3 in quality. Next, find a colt (Stud 4) who tests superior to Stud 2 and as good as Stud 3. Keep on going like this, and soon you'll have a whole range of reference studs you can test new studs against to determine quality.

    So:

Stud 1: worse than Stud 3, as good as Stud 2.
Stud 2: WT Stud 4, AGA Studs 1 and 3
Stud 3: Superior to Stud 1, WT Stud 5, AGA Studs 2 and 4
Stud 4: SUP Stud 2, WT Stud 6, AGA Studs 3 and 5

    ... and so on.

In terms of percentage, I have found that a 1% boost will boost Stud 1 to Stud 2's paper level.

  • I use tiers instead of %s but it’s basically the same. T1 is one superior below breed cap, T2 is at cap, t3 is boosted and t4 is double boosted. Same thing just presented in a different way. Mine are separated by 5%(after T2) and anything that tests lower than my T2 isn’t good enough for my program unless they have an astronomical pt.

I have a stud this is at the cap that I comparison test to. Anything below that isn’t worth boosting to me so I don’t use a % based system.
