Boosting a foal
  • Hello! I have never boosted before and was wondering if it is even possible to get one of my cute little guys to at least as good as sire. He's a chimera and would love to have a chimera stud for my Gen2. (His sire did have 3 chimera babies alone this season, so maybe I'll get lucky next season again!)

  • Brindle/chimera foals that don’t pass testing are one of the greatest frustrations in this game for many of us. Believe me, I feel your pain. While this guy is super cute, he is at least 5% worse than his dad. (Top C paper is known to be 99% breeding ability, while Exceptionally Perfect and Exceptional Producer horses have a 104% breeding ability.). So even using a 5% boost, he would at very best only be exactly as good as dad. If you wanted to throw cost out, you could boost this colt 5%, clone him, and boost his clone 5%. But that would be VERY expensive.

For me personally, this is where I would throw this super cute little guy in a barn (maybe turn off his testing) and see what next season brings you. The wonderful thing about being able to breed colts at 3 and fillies at 4 is that you have an extra season to find stallions for your lines. Hopefully February will bring you an equally cool looking chimera but with better quality.

Are you taking advantage of the pasture bonus? This can make a huge difference to the quality of foals you get out of a herd, and while cycling pastures is a pain when you have more breeders than pasture space, it can be very worthwhile in these sorts of specific situations when you really want a superior foal from a specific stallion.
  • His testing is already off, I didn't want to accidentally geld him before I was ready! I have some G1 mares sitting in pasture but I think they are all yellow papered right now when my new sire is from a pretzel twist so he's B papered. I've been working on getting more liver red mares this season and next season I am hoping to flush all or most of pretzel twist mares this next season and then maybe get them into the pasture for March's breeding season.

I was also playing around with the idea of swapping my chimera filly I got this season to be a colt, but I think it would be amazing to have the chimera mare too. She tested superior to her dam, who is also a pretzel twist, would that mean she would likely test higher then the stallion?

  • She should test higher than her sire. But I’d follow cheers advice and probably wait. You have 3-4 months to figure out what you want to do.

Another option and something I’ve done twice now is make your own 2g chimera. The foals have to be full siblings, and it costs 10 GMTs. You make sure the horse with the best breeding abilities is the primary horse, and the second is the one you’re destroying, the resulting Chimera will have the gender, PT, and breeding abilities of the primary horse.

I’ve done it twice, the first time the colt that tested superior to every other 2g colt I had didn’t have the genes I wanted, so I combined him with a sibling who had failed BA but had the genes I needed. It was way cheaper than boosting a horse to his level. My only regret with him is I didn’t tweak his gene inheritance.

The second boy tested aga Gunhild Gift. Which only two others colts have accomplished so far, plus he had the all the genes I wanted save one. So I merged him with a failed sister who had the missing gene, plus all the others.

  • Oooh! I didn't think of that, but the quality of the second horse (the one that will become strand 2) doesn't affect the overall quality of the chimera? I'll have too see what comes next season because I didn't have as many of the G1 liver red papered mares as I would have liked, and I was also still GMTing my stud so I have been kinda low on funds!

  • Both of those boy’s second half came from either a gelding or spayed filly. So no it doesn’t affect the breeding ability at all. You just have to make sure your GMTing the horse who’s breeding ability you want.

Again you have 3-4 months to figure out what you want to do, you may get your prince charming next month. The way I understand it the age of the primary horse is the age the Chimera will be. So you could use a 3-4 yr old primary horse and combined it with a yearling and still have a breeding adult. I’ve thought about doing it in reverse to have more time to GMT foundations.
  • I have this liver Chimera girl I would consider selling if she would help with your goals
