Bootstrap Help?
  • What kind of testing do yall do on your Bootstrap herd?

I'm beginning to play around with some high PT, high paper ladies. I've BA tested everybody... but what kind of checkpoints did yall hit to get a good herd established?

Do you test at all? SBA? BA? Comparison? What PT cut off?

  • Currently I require a pt score of 14.0 and aga my tier 2, which are at or very near the breeding cap. If I have a super high pt I might allow a lower tier, but not always.

I don’t sba or ba any of my horses because my horses are boosted and wil fail. I comparison test all of my mares and have them sorted into tiers. I originally comparison tested to find my best mare in my herd and then comparison tested to that. I’ve gone up 2 tiers since then, plus 2 more boost levels.
  • It varies greatly for me what I require. I do not require PT at all. Sometimes you can have a superior horse breeding wise with a low PT. I think "the dice" are rolled two separate times for each numbers.

With my lower stallions I'll SBA everyone. With my higher stallions I'll BI the mares and keep golds, and BA the colts. I go by color too and what they like. If I got serious about keeping quality then I would start comparison testing. I am hesitant to do AFPT because sometimes I'll reverse bootstrap. And the quality of my stallions very greatly if I"m trying to get more variety, more color, or more quality so its not fair the mares I breed them to judge by AFPT.

  • I BA my colts but not my fillies. The boys' pass rate gives me an idea of how big the quality gap between my mares and my studs is. Because you are just starting your herd I would recommend papering all the gelded colts (it's free!). Once all the gelded colts are *star papered, you know your mare quality has improved from when you started. Otherwise you have the typical PT milestone achievements, and it's always exciting when you have a few colts pass BA or even test as good as their sire.

I paper, genetic test, and PT test everyone. I sort by PT and keep the top 5-8 fillies that meet my color requirements. Then I run BA on the rest of the fillies and if any pass I keep those too.

I just started comp testing my fillies now that that is available. I have a low benchmark and all my keeper fillies have to be as good as. Once more fillies start testing as good as, I will find a new higher benchmark.

  • I'm thinking I'll continue BA the herd and keeping what passes for breeding. Studs I already am super hard on, so that part wont be so difficult. Mostly just accumulating and working with the mares and figuring out which direction to go. Sounds like everybody has their own way of going about things. I'm sure I'll find mine! I also already paper everything coming in, so that's a good tip there. Anything over G4 must paper Gold/Star here. I think I'll try to stick with studs that test Superior To Sire as well.

  • I never BA girls. Girls only get the snip if they are a paper down from what I expected from the cross. I keep blues, low golds, and mid golds. The blues are either gorgeous from my even lines, or low golds against my foundation studs for sparkle. These ladies are bred for their gold daughters against my star studs. Make sure you turn testing off if you skip BA.

Boys on the other hand I BA before I even open them. If any survive they get compared to their father and my ring leader before I decide if I will keep them and finish testing them.

  • Most of my boots are pretty high-powered as boot horses go.

I normally comparison test the fillies against their dams, but I have a few mares on different tiers of quality that I'll also use as benchmarks if I want to know exactly where a filly ranks among the rest.

Since I mostly use boosted stallions, I comparison test the colts against a benchmark stallion instead of against their own sires. If I'm not using a boosted stallion, I'll comparison test to sire, but that's pretty rare.

The only times I use BA are if: a.) I used a non-boosted stallion and have a reasonable expectation that his breeding quality is relatively even with the mare, and/or b.) I intend to geld/spay anyway and I'm giving the horse one final chance to earn a place in a pasture. :)

As far as PT, I consider it secondary to comparison testing, but I want my stock to be in the mid-13's and into the 14's whenever possible. I'll use a lower PT occasionally, but only if that horse tests superior.
