What if ...?
  • You could only run ONE search (any/all criteria - not counting AFPT) to use to cull pasture mares, what would you search for? What about mares in the barns, would it be the same search? (I do all the barn mares via embryo transfer, so there is that bonus that will apply)

Yes, I am trying to find a quickie cull method! Up until this past summer I had been pretty good at keeping track, but with all the ... excitement ... that the later part of 2020 handed out I let them slide, and now it's a bigger job than I want to mess with!

In the same vein: Would anyone like some HBs for opening my mares pages to update their AFPT?

  • I don't have a premium, so I can't cull by AFPT. I do WAY too much comp testing on all my foals so they all have prefixes with their quality labeled. So I just sort all by name and cull the lower quality ones.

In the barn it's even easier because as long as all the info I need is in the name, I can just use the barn page select horses option to chuck them in the auction right then and there.

  • I only ever cull intact mares by color. Every horse have been compared to sire/dam as a foal (and tested superior), so I know they are improving my lines.

  • I'd be happy to open mare pages for you! :) I have some down time. Just PM me with the details!

  • I can also help!! I usually do my gals every 2 months or so. Beyond that, I keep mares who are AGA their dam if their dam is from ExPro/ExPerf blood as a base. So when I need space, those gals are the first to leave. I'm picky genetic wise as well, so the more "boring" bases also get the boot quicker. On the flip side, I only keep studs who test STS.

  • I wish the foal records reflected auction cull foals from mares and studs and the ratio of active foals to auctioned foals was searchable as a measure of breedability. At least with mares I can count out foaling years and decide if a mare is producing a respectable number of passing foals with my studs. I'm checking their records at 10 years and 13 years.
  • When my intact herd gets to big I tighten up the restrictions I place on them. All my intacts get the same testing and are culled by the same set of rules and I do so many searches X_X

I start by SBA’ing everyone and kicking the altered out to an empty barn then PTing what’s left.

I sort my barn horses by ID# and open a search in another window and sort by consistency and jump to the last page and look for the divide between consistent and inconsistent and as I scroll down the search page I check off all the inconsistent horses in the barn and use the bulk geld/ spay button. Since they are already checked off they get kicked to the same barn as the SBA failed and that barn gets sent to the auction to make room.

Then I Gene test what’s left in the barn (this is where I have started to up the anti to reduce numbers) I open the search and do several searches for horses with e, nd1, nd2, colour not like grullo and last must not have any Ice. I alter everything that pops up from those 5 searches. They and everything I snip after get sent to my show barns.

Once everything is EE DD Ice # (I breed for grullo with ice) I paper and snip all c and yellow papers.

The next part takes me the longest since I cross reference all of the foals inherited ice genes (kp or fantasy genes on hj1) and snip any that missed inheriting and from either parent. I have the genes I’m looking for in the names prefixes so I don’t have to open every foal and another search with must have “i” I can quickly run through all the foals that only have 1 set of ice genes and if both parents have ice snip them.

Then I go through and comp test everything only keeping the superior and giving them their own set of prefixes before tossing them onto their generations breeding barn. Every few months I remember to top up the pastures.

Once I sit down to cull it actually runs smoothly and I process a lot of foals. My hardest part is setting aside the time to do it. Here I have 7 year olds in my foal holding barn. On HJ1 I had 10 year olds who’s still hasn’t been papered. But over the last 2 weeks I’ve set aside time to sit down on hj1 and I cleared both 1000 stall “foal” holding barns and my 860 new pasture foals out. I just have about 150 left to go through on hj2 but somehow even though this always has less horses it tends to take me longer to get through them.

  • @RubyJoFarm your comment had me curious to know whether sorting by paper in the search would sort by actual percentage level or just by the broader paper level (A B C etc). I label my studs numerically when I get a superior guy (2 is higher than 1, 3 is higher than 2, etc). When I sorted my studs by paper they weren't in order of superiority so I don't think the search sorts by percentage unfortunately.

  • @HTRanch that's quite alright, I like the bracket it provides. I usually pull inconsistent and lower papers (g2 red, for example, whereas I'd prefer all G2 blues I need bodies for now to breed lol

  • I would do a horse with no sooty or no kit genes but depends on what you like! I personally never cull mares though. With the comparisons when they are young I can know exactly if I want them!
