So Upset!
  • Just bred my 2 Watercolors together and the foal was an Excessive White and died. I’m so upset! I seriously feel like I’m going to cry! My first attempt at breeding a Watercolor failed!

Question though: Does that mean that all of the foals from those 2 horses will be Excessive White or is that Random?
  • Depends on the genes. Link your two foundations and maybe we can help give you some odds.

  • It looks like they both carry Frame, so yes, 25% of the time you will have Lethal White.

  • Only 25% of them? So not all of them will be Lethal White?
  • Guess I wasn’t thinking correctly when I made 2 Frame horses my Watercolor pair. :(
  • Each pairing will have a 25% chance of inheriting frame but it does not mean that this foal passed away so the next 3 will survive.

You can always remove the frame from the mare since she doesn't have any foals listed or sell all the stallions foals back to the game and when they clear off his list take his frame off.

I don’t mind frame on my mares but I don’t allow it on my studs since they can be bred many more times. That way I don’t have to worry about foals dying from inheriting 2 copies.

  • I removed the Frame from the Mare and made her a Homozygous Tobiano instead!

I wish I could have removed it from the Stallion instead since I’ve lost 3 from him so far due to the Excessive White Gene but I really don’t want to sell any of his offspring back to the game. He produces lovely Watercolor foals. His offspring are gorgeous!
  • I have to remember that about Frame from now on! No more Frame Stallions!
  • Mark your olw mares (add something to their names so you remember they have frame) and don’t breed them to him then you won’t loose any from lethal frame (although there are a bunch of other genes that can produce lethal white foals)

  • Isn’t Splash another one that can? I could have sworn Frame, Splash and one other one that I can’t remember are the big OLW ones.
  • W10, W1, and W2 are tricky but also just watching White Factor and being extra careful. I go through all my mares and re-sort them every season for my studs and even looking at all of them individually, I still get one (or two on a bad month)lethal foals every so often.

  • Quite a bummer considering that Splash Frame Overo is one of my favorites!
  • Kind of! I’ve never been good at reading charts though.
  • So for the colorful chart, crossing any of the green genes are mostly safe, but they get more risky the closer to red you get. The dark reds are almost always lethal as far as i know. I dont mess with them. I never cross any white spotting genes on purpose anymore that are red or maroon, and I am just very careful watching white factors with orange matches. theres also a heavier load with additional white genes as far as i know. So like, splash isnt too Scary, but if you mix it with Frame and then try to cross in say, W1 (W on the chart) or something similar, you're likely to have a lost foal.

  • Splash stuff:

There are also splash crosses all by themselves that are lethal. Luckily, the genes involved are all GMT/RGS only genes so it’s something you are unlikely to mess up early in your playing. For the below discussion assume the horses have no other patterns that would cause the horse to have an excessive white burden, but remember that a rule of thumb is more white on the parents = higher chance of a lethal foal. Except with appy. Appy is the exception to pretty much all rules....

Splash 1 is the splash that happens normally in game. It’s safe to cross with itself (Hom Splash) or with any of the other 3 splash genes.

Splash 2 and 3 are lethal when homozygous and lethal when mixed together. Splash 2 and 3 both look basically like normal splash but more extreme.

Splash M or Macchiato is safe when homozygous or mixed with the other 3 splash variations.

  • Thank you all so much! I think I’m starting to figure it out now. Thank you
