I think my colt is too high for my mares!

I think I may have given this boy too much juice, out of 50 foals, only two foals passed BA on his first season. I know I gave him a boost, but I expected more to make it!

And to top it off they booth managed to miss all the fancy genes I wanted XD

  • Yeah, bootstrapped horses can be very difficult to get intacts from, as it is very hard to gauge their breeding level. I would suggest not using BA/SBA at all, but rather paper them and keep any golds/stars that you like. And possibly compare the fillies to their dams if you have the cash for it, as you will most likely have alot of superiors :)

  • @Maribo It hadn´t been an issue before, when I bred his dad to these mares I usually got around 3/4ths of the foals through BA. I wish there was like a points system, or there were more levels than just yellow, red, blue and gold so that we could rate them with more details. Guess Iĺl just be spending a lot of money on comparison tests!
  • I agree with Maribo. I don't use BA on any of my bootstraps until I'm done breeding them and I need to make a decision to either sell them or stuff them in my show herd.

  • I normally use 5% boosted sires, so I tend not to BA my bootstraps unless I wasn't planning on breeding them anyway and have nothing to lose. (Once in a while I get surprised!) I comparison test the fillies against their mothers (and sometimes their grandmothers) and I usually test the colts against a benchmark stallion or against their grandsire. Those are very nice colts though. Any chance of GMTing the desired genes on?

  • @pfrsue I think I will be fine, this boy has many years, and if I get one or two passing foals that gives me plenty. And I can always unalter too
