Can anyone help me choose horses for my story?
  • So I've been getting all of my notes ready for the NaNo story I'm planning to complete next month, and I have hit a snag. I am so absolutely sick of the stereotype in stories that the hero has a white (yes, I know it's actually grey) horse and the villain has a black horse. Though I understand the trope, there are so many beautiful colors and patterns, that I want to have an assortment of horses, but I can't seem to decide on anything specific. So I was hoping at least a couple people could chime in with different colors, builds, and patterns that they would like to see in a medieval fantasy story. The horses I need to have a firm description of are...

    1) The prince's mount: The prince is 9 so it's totally fine to make this one a pony.
    2) The Royal Guard's war horse
    3) The Royal Guard's traveling horse
    4) The protag's brother's horse: Note that this horse is a mare and the foal of the protag's horse, which is a black, lighter boned stallion...yes, I am aware that it's still a stereotype but I actually needed this horse to be black for the story.
    5) The antagonist's horse
    6) A wild mare that ends up following the protag's journey and befriends the prince

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts or examples, I'd love to see them. I'm just having a hard time making up my mind. Thank you to everyone that took the time to read this! I hope the end of your year is awesome!
  • This is what I see for #3.

A large white speckled chestnut mare. She's a little light to be a draft, but muscular and tall. Some of her patches shone like the snow on a clear day, and most of her back was covered with rich deep spots. Sweet brown eyes, and 3 white socks.

  • Ohh your story sounds fun. I’m just going to mention colors that came to mind with the descriptions you gave.

    1) flaxen chestnut. Chestnut Tobino, or buckskin personally I’d use a welsh pony body type. Or welsh/Morgan mix.
    2) blue roan, grullo, chestnut, I’m thinking dark or harder to see color to blend in with background. You don’t want attention if you’re a guard.
    3) Bay, dark brown, same thought process as what I mentioned for horse 2. I’d picture his body type more sleek not quite Thoroughbred but close.
    4) palomino, buckskin, something golden.
    5) flaxen liver chestnut, cremello
    6) dappled grey, appaloosa,

Personally when I’m writing a story I make the horse figure out it’s personality, and owners personality and add the color that fits the best later. The book I'm writing now my main character’s mare is snow white, not the choice either my character or I would have chosen (stereotype, and dramatic) but it fit the mare. Her color wasn’t decided until I’d written several chapters, her name was also decided when I got sick of calling her mare. Lol.
  • Medieval fantasy, Nano, AND horses?? Count me in! I signed up for Nano this year but still have no clue what I'm writing oops so we'll see lol. But figuring out everyone's horses are my favorite part!

First, a quick question; are the horses in your story based off of the medieval "breeds" that were around at one point, or more based off of the horses we have today? In either case, I'll link some horses I feel fit your story lol.

    1) I could see something like this girl for the prince, though probably a gelding instead of a mare haha. Maybe a bit stockier, too.

    2) I think this girl fits for a war horse pretty well:

    3) This girl for a traveling horse, maybe?

    4) This girl coloring-wise for the protag's brother's horse? Depending on the dam, she could be lighter or more midweight boned.

    5) As an inverted version of that trope you mentioned, maybe this one or a similar gray for the antagonist's? (Could symbolize grey morality if you wanted to go that route too lol)

    6) Maybe this one coloring-wise for the wild horse?

Your story sounds awesome! You'll have to let us know how it goes and good luck with Nano!

  • Out of interest, I did a quick google search and found some articles about symbolism and preferences for coat colors during medieval times. (I'm also making some assumptions that your story is set in a European medieval context, sorry if I'm assuming too much). I linked the article I read, and if you want to read the actual study it should be cited there.

So based on what I read, here is what I came up with:

    1) A dark bay pony with minimal white markings and the build of a British native breed.

    2) A deep red chestnut destrier.

    3) A chestnut with small white speckles all over. Of similar quality to #2. The white spotting would make this horse undesirable as a nobleman's horse, but maybe it could be a color crop-out from quality bloodlines and thus more affordable for a guard.

    4) A young steel gray mare with Barb influence from her sire:

    5) Red horses were prized for war and might be good symbolism for an antagonist horse but I already have a chestnut in this lineup. So maybe a bright DP bay.

    6) A cute little dun that reminds me of Wildland Acre's bootstraps.

  • Adding my 2 cents to the pile!

    1) The prince's mount: I would love to see a haflinger!
    2) The Royal Guard's war horse: clydesdale/shire/percheron all the way!
    3) The Royal Guard's traveling horse: arabian or criollo, or an icelandic pony
    4) The protag's brother's horse: thoroughbred or a finer quarter horse. Or a finer Canadian!
    5) The antagonist's horse: american saddlebred
    6) A wild mare: one of the Alberta Wildies!

  • Okay, here is my stab at it. Although I think #2 could be a dark chestnut shire with white socks or leave it as shown but make it a Friesian horse.

  • Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't gotten back to you all sooner; life threw another curveball and I've been trying to get everything back in order. Unfortunately, I will not be doing actual NaNo this year because of the curveball, but I do still plan on writing the entire book in a month. It will just be next month, I guess. b-( More time to prepare I suppose. Anyway, I wanted to thank you all for your feedback; I was shocked that so many people had amazing ideas for horse types. I'll respond below. Note: I've only really decided on the antagonist's horse, so I don't have many specific choices yet, but you all gave me so much to think about and I am seriously looking at them all.

@Seaswell, she is absolutely beautiful! I love how you describe her, too. I'm not sold on the traveling horse being so big, but the markings are wonderful and I can definitely hear my character speaking about his horses that way. So thank you!

@BlaxkDiamond, I definitely understand about personality first with horses; that's why my protag's horse is black. I tried so hard to avoid black and white, and he popped up black anyway. Anyway, the main reason I was looking for ideas for these horses is that they don't show up in the story as major characters that much, whereas the protag's horse does. So I don't know how much of their personalities I'll actually get into. But I did love your suggestions; I actually did decide to make the antagonist's horse cremello after I looked it up. It just fits the antagonist so much to have that color horse. So thank you!

@stardustgirl, I hope you figured out what to write; NaNo is really fun to do! I'm disappointed I wasn't able to do it this year. I also loved your suggestions; the markings on the first and second just jumped out at me as perfect, though I still don't know why. That's the fun of writing your own story; even YOU don't know what's going to happen next sometimes. When I finish the story, I'm hoping to find a few people I can send it to for feedback on how to refine it, so I will be sure to let you know how the story goes.

@HTRanch, wow. I didn't even think to look up the color meaning in horses. @-) That is so cool! Unfortunately, my story isn't really based on English culture; it's actually more based on indigenous people who have been invaded/conquered and how they have to find a new place in their homeland when they are not welcome anymore. Sorry I didn't explain that before. But the Invaders are based on stereotypical white people, so the insight was fascinating and very helpful. Thanks so much!

@BlueValley, this was a lot of fun! I only knew a few of those breeds and had to look up the others, but seeing actual builds and quirks helped me get a better idea of what I was looking for in these horses, so thanks so much! After all those pictures, I did decide to base the antagonist's horse off of an American saddlebred; it fit so well. So thank you so much!

@WolfDen, how did I never think of satin horses for the prince?! Gah! They are so pretty and perfect for the royal hierarchy. Thank you so much for the examples; they helped a ton. I also totally fell in love with the second horse, though I'm not sure why. Maybe I can work him in somewhere else.

Anyway, again, thank you all for your suggestions; they have helped immensely. If anyone is interested in how the story goes I can certainly keep you all updated. Also, since I have had to move my start date on writing a bit, if anyone else has any ideas, feel free to leave them! I got a couple of other characters that might need horses of their own, so all suggestions are welcome and valued. Hope you all have a great end to the year! Be safe!
  • I'm not sure how helpful I'd be at checking out the story development, but I'm pretty good at checking for spelling and grammatical errors or picking out awkward sentence structures, suggesting smoother ways to say things. If you'd like that kind of help, I'd be willing to do that for you.
