Dun Factor Promoter is here!
-
Yesterday a new gene was added to the game. Dun Factor Promoter is a secondary gene that interacts with dun genes (Dun and Onyx) to modify the appearance of dun. The first allele to be added is DFP1. When homozygous, DFP1 will produce subtle brindle like markings on dun and onyx horses.
Hypothetical and Open
This gene has no required license and anyone may own and breed it. It does, however, have sharing restrictions like nexus and the open ice genes. DFP1 can not be placed on public lists but can be privately shared as you see fit.
This is not a fantasy gene as it is based on hypothetical possible real-life genetics.
Real Life Brindle Dun
In real life, some horses with the dun gene end up with brindle like markings throughout their body. It is unclear the exact cause of these markings and it may be a mix of skewed dun markings and just assorted genetic and environmental factors. They seem to be more associated with heavy primitive dun markings and have a very slight tendency towards showing in some families more than others. There is no clear mode of inheritance.
Why not Brindle1?
Brindle1 is a real gene found on the sex chromosome of horses. When a horse carries one X chromosome with Brindle 1 and one normal X chromosome, lyonization (the inactivation of one or the other X gene) causes a brindle like texture to the coat where the curled hair gene turns on and off. Our image system really is not able to handle coat texture well and our horse gender system is not currently set up to work via inherited X and Y chromosome. Brindle1 is the first known sex-linked color gene in horses so there was never a point before. It also has very limited cases where it will actually show. For all of these reasons, I decided to go after brindle dun markings and not the documented Brindle1 gene.
What about nd1?
Non-Dun 1 is not a true dun variant so it does not count towards Dun Factor Promoter genes.
This gene will be on sale until at least July 15th.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

So when you referred to brindle markings on dun horses irl, were you possibly referring to Bider marks in Mongolian horses?ID 43830
It's nice to be back! :)

Nope not in the least. I am talking about the brindle markings that can often show up on dun horses of any breed. Like this boy

If i add this to a chimera in hom form, it goes to all 4 slots, right? Does it charge 4 times? Just want to clarify so i can plan out when to get it.#28036

To add it to a chimera, you would need to add it to all four slots, one at a time - so you would be purchasing 4 copies of it.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.

It only shows two on RGS and in PayPal. I'll wait for Ammit's reply.#28036

That above poster is not correct AT ALL.
The upgrade page actually should tell you how it works if you select a chimera. You only pay for two copies. You have no option to pick a set in the RGS. It will always update both sets when you purchase strand 1 or strand 2.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. I knew it updated both sets but wasn't sure if it charged twice. I didn't think it did with how it looked in PayPal, but just wanted to make double sure before I bought it because limited funds. :)#28036

Oh awesome, this is a great way to have a form of inheritable brindle. I love all the interesting markings dun can bring in real life on the more extreme duns! Not only the brindles but the bider markings like mentioned above, gives lots of possibilities for another dun promoter gene!!

Fascinating!De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I realize you may not have any idea or wish to disclose if you do have an idea, but do you have a timeline for additional DFP alleles? Even if it's just on the time table of "within six months" or "not for at least a year"? I'm planning my next stud, and if I double down on DFP1 I likely won't be able to afford a hypothetical DFP2 if it comes out soon. I totally understand if you don't know/don't have plans/don't want to tell.~Purveyor of the finest riding horses in Rakia~
