How do you all keep your genes straight on your horses?
  • I have been trying to come up with a way to know which horse has what genes. I don't know how to do it especially my closed genes. How do you all figure out a way to do it?
  • This is the best example in my gen 2 stud barn.

He is het for chinchilla, onyx, nexus, watercolor and sabino 2.
    Hom for dp.

  • I don’t go by individual horse anymore, I go by line. All of my individual lines can trace back to one foundation stud per line, each with its own set of genes. All of my mares carry the foundation studs name in their name, plus their generation and paper. My studs carry a version of the foundation studs name, plus their generation and paper. I know, just by looking at the foundation studs name in the individual horses name, what assortment of genes that horse could/should be carrying and where it belongs in the pastures.

    Example:
Foundation Stud: Aegon Targaryen - Brown Pearl Appaloosa, Hom for Onyx, GP, snowflake, het Splash M, with w10 and KitM
Second Gen stud: G2A Daemon Targaryen (meaning second gen A papered stud, from the Targaryen line)
Mares of various gen: G2B Taryaryen ID# (Meaning a Blue papered gen 2 mare from Aegon Targaryens line, meaning it’s a brown onyx Appaloosa with GP and snowflake)
  • I like Fallens way, but my lines weave together so I'm not sure how I'd figure that one out in later gens lol. Right now, I have a set letter or combo of letters that I know is for a certain gene so I know at a glance what a horse has that I'm looking to pass on. Examples- WT = watercolor, KP= kit promoter, D=DP, K2=KP2, X= Nexus...
I also name my mares in such a way with the name generator that I know who their sires are so I can keep up with who I want to breed them to. Example- sires name is CarryOnWaywardSon, fillies name will be Wayward(whatever pops up on the generator) knowing that that particular sire is hom snowflake, I know she's at least het so I breed her to a snowflake stud, if that makes sense. She would also have SF/sf after her name. Capital is homozygous, lower case is het.
Gens will all be at the front of the name
Like 3WRB, tells me it's a 3rd gen blue papered mare (the WR in the middle is Windigo Ranch lol)
Here's some of my boys to give you a visual

    3WA Ruckus CK2SADGSSUP

Ruckus is hom for all the things I want to keep up with listed in his name. C is for chocolate, cause I use b already to note phantom bats. He's also superior to his sire and my 3g benchmark.

Rock has w10 and I wanted to make sure I knew it before I even start breeding him so I know what to avoid since it doesn't usually play well with others lol.

Mixer has so much stuff going on I couldn't fit it all! He's het for pretty much every open gene so I just marked the ones I follow closely and he mainly sees his siblings in the breeding shed to give me a chance at hom for everything 3rd gens. I just love studio ponoc!
  • Suffix with color and pattern code. There are now enough genes in the game that where any given letter falls in the suffix may indicate which gene it refers to. My code used to fairly closely mirror the sequence in which genes were indicated in the genetic test results, but with the changes in how things are displayed that is no longer the case.

The code generally runs in 5 parts.
    1) pre-base color special gene codes for genes like GP, KP, onyx, snowflake, phantom, DP, Axiom, Warp, Thunder, mushroom, chin
    2) base color and color modifiers
    3) patterns (Kit, splash, appy, rabicano, frame)
    4) post-base color special gene codes for genes like ice, nexus, the other rainbow riot genes
    5) a numeral for generation in non-foundation, non-bootstrap horses.

In general, stallions get a little more info in their codes than mares. In some generations there may also be a code for how the horse comp tested.

Happy to write down my gene codes if anyone is interested.
  • I do something like this. Abbreviation for the gene name, the generation and the parent's names to try to keep it straight

  • Cheers I would be very interested in how you have yours. I am about to do a complete overhaul to name my horses. Mostly from 14 years old and down.
  • So originally i used the alphabet and assigned a gene to a letter and then made it so upper case meant homozygous and lowercase meant heterozygous (ex: "N" for homozygous Snowflake or "s" for heterozygous sooty+ and so on). I also used numbers for ice and white genes. This got to be very tedious and annoying to me because i had to individually name everything one at a time.

Now, I keep it very simple. So i have three main lines but MANY genes thrown into each for extra pizzazz.
    - Mushroom Line (also has DP, KP, Onyx, Spiders, Lace, Satin, etc)
    - Chinchilla Line (also has Bats, Skulls, Pumpkins, Ghosts, Onyx, KP, Satin, etc)
    - Nexus Line (has a little bit of everything, open and closed)

Since there are way too many genes to notatein a single horse's name sometimes, i now simplify it by the most important gene in the line; Mushroom, Chinchilla, or Nexus.

The lines are named as such:
    Mushroom - "A# Mu(A) ID NUMBER"
    Chinchilla - "A# Chn(A) ID NUMBER"
Nexus - "A# NX ID NUMBER ***OR*** A# SP ID NUMBER"

Show breeders are simply named "SB ID NUMBER" unless they have a specific pasture, then "SB" becomes whatever initials i have assigned to that pasture.

**A = the first letter of my stable name
    **# = generation (A1 = foundation, A2 = second gen, etc)
    **Mu = Mushroom
    **Chn = Chinchilla
**(A) = I used to have a line of B/Red foundations so i distinguished between the two by adding an "A" for the A/Blue foundation line or a "B" for the B/Red foundation line
    **NX = Nexus
**SP = Studio Ponoc or Space Project (my two main nexus studs)
**ID NUMBER = pretty self explanatory :)

Studs/Colts that i keep intact are typically the only horses i ever give a real name to. Fillies and show horses just get their ID numbers. I now just ignore all the other genes and just consider them to be a bonus but i keep my focus on the main 3. By 3rd gen ALL my foals have to be homozyous for their respective gene in order to stay intact so i don't have to worry about "losing" the main gene later on.

  • Here's my system:

The horse name starts with initials. This denotes which closed/fantasy genes the horse has. These letters match the order the genes appear on the horse search page. Here's my cheat sheet:
    B - Basic Ponies
    N - Nacre
    M - Macchiato
    W - Watercolor
    R - Wrong Warp
    X - Nexus
    G - Axiom Green
    D - Axiom Red
    E - Axiom Blue
    C - Chinchilla
    I - Various Ices
    O - Onyx
    T - Chocolate

This is followed by the number of their generation.

Then, mares will get a lowercase 's' if they have tested superior to their dams (I don't generally keep AGA males, so I automatically assume they are superior).

Then the horse will get an 'L' if they are liver/chocolate palomino and 'F' if they carry frame.

    Here are some examples:

    MXN3 Drama Daemon

    image
    B3sF Freaky Melon

    image
    MXW3sL Charm of an Angel

There's some other stuff I do, like denoting unevenly bred/bootstrapper horses with UB and putting a P if I'm on the fence about keeping a foal - but that's pretty much the basics of my system.
