CONGRATULATIONS! What a wonderful accomplishment. I hope you get to enjoy some fantastic celebrations now, and even more celebrations in the future!

Are you taking “newborn” pictures with your printed thesis?

P.S. If you don’t mind me being nosy, what was your topic? I’m That Person who reads thesis (theses?) and dissertations for fun.

Congratulations! How did it went? Were you nervous?

I finally submitted my master's thesis last week and if they find it okay I'll have to defend it too, but I'm already scared for it now! So if you have any tips I'd love to hear them!

First, Thank you for your congratulations! I greatly appreciate them. I have also sent out all the straws that have been requested so far. I will keep this offer open for a few more days. :)

My topic was WWII in the Great Lakes region of the USA, particularly in Lake Michigan around the Chicago area. There were two sidewheel paddle steamers that were converted into training aircraft carriers there during the war. My thesis was looking into the conversion process they underwent and their impact on the war effort.

As far as tips go, I had it relatively easy because of COVID. I defended over WEBEX (which is like zoom) and only my committee members were a part of the conversation. I know if I had defended in person there would have been at least 5 more people there and I don't do as well in front of large groups. It was also handy to have my notes right next to the slide in front of me instead of down in front of me like they would be if I was at a podium. After virtually attending a few other thesis defenses, I would say my grain of advice would be to literally write down everything you're going to say (down to Hello/Welcome to my thesis defense...) and practice that script over and over again so it doesn't look or sound like you're reading off the script but you actually are.
