Stallions to Mares?
  • So in my gen 2 foals I got 11 A papered stallions and about 4 blue papered mares. Do you guys change studs to mares when this happens? Will they turn into blue papered mares if I do? Is this even allowed? I don't want all the studs to go to waste when I don't have enough mares to breed to.

  • I don't do it often, because it's kind of expensive, but I've totally done it!

It is allowed, because you are using your GMT resources that you earned (or purchased) to make the change. It is your choice.

I've never seen the paper levels not match - I don't know if there's a guarantee that they'll paper blue after the switch (you will have to re-test them after the swap), but I would be very surprised if they did not.

  • You can absolutely swap the colts to fillies, and they should paper blue. However, my suggestion would be to hang onto those colts for a couple seasons without doing the gender change. See how your pasture does for the next 2 or 3 seasons. If you still aren’t getting the blue fillies but lots of A colts, then go ahead and do a couple gender swaps. Save up your money and IVs until you see how the next couple seasons go. That way you aren’t dumping a ton of money into colts you might not need, but you also aren’t snipping horses you might potentially want left intact (because then it’s twice as expensive to gender swap them, one token to ungeld and one token to gender swap).

  • Good idea @fallenshadows714! I will use one or two that I really like and save the others. I keep forgetting that I'm in no hurry :D

  • I get a lot of 2g A colts, and I swap some of them over. They have to comparison test as good as my benchmark 2g stallion to get on the gender swap list. Testing worse than my benchmark gets the snip. Doing this (1) gets them to an affordable amount to swap (2) hopefully ensures I am getting high blues. And like Fallen suggested, I wait until they are 4 before I make the final decision. They can't be used for brood before that anyway :)

  • I have a 2g stud that tends to throw more boys than girls with the right genes. I've switched several over the last couple seasons, but I usually save gmts for consistency and the bay alleles.
