Is this actually a genetic code?
-
So, I've been messing around, trying to figure out the genetic code for my breeding goals. I know I want a white-spotted liver chestnut brindle appaloosa. But the genetic code however is where it got fuzzy. I do want snf, kp, dp, and lace.

That is a white spotted chestnut appaloosa brindle with lace. If it has DP as a hidden gene it will say liver chestnut rather than chestnut.Breeding Tiny Bootstraps
PM me if you ever fancy any of my stock. Always got good (small) bootstrap studs. -
If it is a snowflake you may be able to see it (if it did not have lace you could enter into the snowflake club). If it has hom KP you will possibly see it and again if it wasn't for the lace you could enter the KP club.
Post a picture and we will try to help further. :)Breeding Tiny Bootstraps

Breeding brindle is almost impossible - it's random and rare on non foundations.Breeding Tiny Bootstraps

I don't have a picture of the horse, I'm just messing around trying to write the code.Home of Big N' Bruised and Shine High Bootstraps

Yes, that could potentially be a code for what you want, since the code will not actually show anything to let you know the horse is carrying DP, KP, or snowflake. Those are only visible traits that you can see, and you have to know the lineage of the horse to determine if a horse that doesn’t display these traits is a carrier or not.
Example
This horse is a Hom snowflake, Hom KP, and at least het DP. There is no lace, because the horse was bred before the gene was introduced, but you can see in the code where there is no “marker” for DP, KP, or snowflake.

So ee is essential to getting a red based horse rather than a black or bay based horse.
a/A/At/A+ doesn’t matter because it won’t be expressed, so I would totally ignore the Agouti allele.
CC—yep, no cream, no pearl.
nd2nd2—Yep, on point for no dun type pattern.
gg — Yep no gray
ff—so this is flaxen and “f” is the what makes a horse flaxen so this horse will be a flaxen chestnut. Add any F and they won’t be flaxen. If you care about flaxen (light mane and tail on a red base) vs not, you can adjust this. Depends on how uniform you want them to look!
S+Ssty so obviously this horse is Het for S+ which will lighten and brighten a liver somewhat, making them more red gold than dark liver red or nearly black. Again, depends on what you want in your herd, but the most important thing here is you don’t want any plain S.
pp — p is where pangare is. Two little ps gives no lightening to the coat, any big P will lighten it at the elbows, muzzle and flanks.
KitMKitM Yep Hom for Kit M. If you want hom KP to show obviously you need two pattern genes here.
LlpLlp so this horse won’t have any spots because it’s hom for appaloosa—May or May not have a white blanket marking or even be whited out depending on the PATN1 situation. But all of this horse’s babies will be Appaloosas.
PhnLacePhn so this horse will be Lace but each foal only has a 50/50 chance at lace.
WF Medium—White factor tends to go up as you breed further generations, so you might consider skewing this down initially. Doesn’t really matter though.
Mosaic — as has been said, you can’t really breed for brindle, you can just breed brindles to each other and hope.
The hidden genes you are looking for, DP, Snf, KP....you will have to know what the parent statuses are but your best bet there is to start with a foundation stallion that is hom for everything, so a “black” liver with snowflake, hom Llp, hom KitM and hom KP. You will need to breed him to mares that all have 2 kit patterns and are all hom Ssty chestnuts or livers, whatever you choose for your herd but I recommend mostly Tobiano and roan if you can’t afford to put Kit M on everything.
That way all of your foals will be het DP liver Appaloosas with two kit patterns. All of them will be het for KP and snowflake, a few might be hom for snowflake with mamas carrying the hidden gene.
If you breed those babies to each other, each will have a 1/4 chance of having hom KP, or hom snowflake, or hom DP...very few will have all 3 but as you keep on breeding you will eventually get there. This will be a VERY long term project though unless you can afford to spend a TON on GMTing foundation mares to get a homogenous herd to start with. -
@Cheers oh wow thank you for all of that! All of what you typed for every allele is on point for my goals, the only problem is I barely have the funds for the gmts that I'd need. As is I'm trying to build my foundie stud, Trial Bruises. He's already hom Lace, all I need on him is snf when it's in the store, Kp, dp, lp, hom kitm, and at least one copy of s+Home of Big N' Bruised and Shine High Bootstraps

Oh I hear you! Building a herd of mares just for my DP KP line was hard, time consuming and expensive. Even more so if you’re trying to build that herd as only exceptional foundation quality. If you’re open to normal creates, there are a lot more options as far as herd helpers to help you out. Try to avoid splash and frame, W1 and W2. Decide whether or not you’re going to allow W20–if you do it opens your options up a LOT. And then create create create.

Yeah, even so, I'm even letting this be a bootstrap to open up my horizons tooHome of Big N' Bruised and Shine High Bootstraps

My herd has evolved quite a bit. When I started I had no concept of the variety of options, and I still see new expressions every once in a while that prompt me to make choices in my lines. And new genes tempt me. I'm still in love with heavy buckskins with appaloosa, but now I have a much better understanding of the ingredients I need to mix together at the beginning to get Amazing at generation 3 and 4 on a regular basis.
Somewhere around here @Cheers has a thread that explains quite a few of the genes, don't let her amazing ability to simplify each gene fool you. :x45120Thanked by 1Cheers -
@Seaswell I know of the thread, I've actually had it bookmarked for quite a while now! :DHome of Big N' Bruised and Shine High Bootstraps

@SandyHoof You can also buy into existing lines. I might have some second gen colts/fillies from my Hom snowflake/KP/DP line I could sell you while you are working towards your own foundation. While it’s not perfect, it still gets you going. All the second gens would be guaranteed heterozygous for snowflake/KP/DP/S+/pearl/satin, and either have white 8 or sabino 2. Not the KitM you want, but you can add that later

@FallenShadows714 Oh that sound's wonderful! Thank you so much! Can you pm me showing me what you're willing to part with?Home of Big N' Bruised and Shine High Bootstraps

I’m willing to part with some straws from this second gen guy - don’t let his white looks fool you, he used to be a regular stunner before the snf/appy got him all whited out! Hom DP/KP/SNF and carries ice 8, too - a fun fantasy gene to play with.
If you’re interested, send me a PM!
2SK Frozen Speckles
I also have a couple eggs laying around from fillies of the same gene line, too, though I don’t remember off the top of my head if any of them have the ice 8. I can poke through them more when I get home to see.ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines!
