Anxiety is through the roof!
  • Things have just been crazy and I feel the need to release some of my thoughts to people who could have/ have experienced anything similar. I started a new job at FedEx Ground. I love it, I really do, management is amazing. However, yesterday an incident occurred with one of my favorite managers, at least he was my favorite. (PM for details, not sharing details in post) Long story short, today I had to file a sexual harassment complaint against him. I'm so anxious and worried about how it's all gonna pan out. Management has expressed serious concern as it's not the first incident of a similar nature with this manager. Since managers have access to employee records it has me worried. Higher up management, we call him Bird, said I should have no fear of retaliation as the whole building has my back in the matter. I can't help but worry, what if he finds me outside of work? Or what if I'm walking past one of the belts he manages and he follows me or something. I'm a huge over thinker and this situation has me so anxious.
  • Oh that’s terrible! Feeling unsafe at work is not cool. I hope management acts on your complaint quickly to remove this issue! Big hugs!
  • They just said it's quite concerning as this specific manager doesn't talk to anyone and he is basically a mystery to everyone, including the other management, and for him to share such personal things with me is concerning.
  • I'm sorry this happened to you. I'm glad management is taking it seriously. Is it legal to carry pepper spray with you where you live? I'm not necessarily suggesting using it, but it might make you feel more secure just to have it. Or set up a record/video fast button on your phone, and make sure coworkers/friends know where you are/ your plans.

5 or so years back I faced a similar debacle. I was harassed at work. I didn't know what to do. I blamed myself, but was scared to act due to having my horse there (I was doing working board). I did call him out, and called his wife (technically she was my boss, and promptly dismissed her husbands actions) and brought my dog (a black lab/border collie mix) with me (more for show, she is a wimp, but loud). Come summer I moved my horse. I was asked if I would still do occasional feedings/chores and politely declined. Since then I have gotten training in empty hand, stick fighting, and knife fighting.

  • I have to go through a metal detector at security every morning. We can't have phones or anything phone related, no weapons or anything. If we get caught with headphones if we've accidentally left them in our pocket, we can get written up and face losing our job. We handle the packages and they think we've stolen items from boxes if we have extra stuff. I'm allowed to have my wrist strap for my scanner on the van lines and that's it. My one manager Nick is MMA and Judo trained, he said if I have any problems find him immediately. I'm honestly scared to death to go in tonight.
  • That sucks. Hopefully they adjusted the schedule already so it is only people you trust on floor tonight. Get one of the managers to walk you out to your car if it is dark when you leave and wait until you are in your vehicle with doors locked. Yes, I'm a scaredy cat, who also over thinks things.
  • I ride with my friend Daniel and we usually leave together. I work a 2am to 8am shift. They won't adjust the schedule, they'll probably fire him. The department I work in is quite large and the manager that I've file against is in charge of 3 package belts. I'll just ask to stay in unload or go to belts 100-500.
  • That is so scary. Stay safe and let us know how your shift goes.

  • I return on the 2nd of January. I hope Bird has news on what's gonna happen. I'll feel bad if he loses his job, but what if he would've taken it a step further with me or someone else?
  • You are not responsible for his actions - don't beat yourself up about it!

  • While it was nothing that required me to worry about my safety, I did get a man fired for sexual harassment where I work. The man insisted on popping open women's bras, even though multiple women told him to stop. My work place has a zero tolerance policy, and when I finally got the women to report him, he was fired. While I did feel slightly guilty, he was warned by others multiple times and had the choice to stop his actions. I have a feeling the person you are having problems with has also been warned multiple times. The fault belongs squarely on his shoulders and has nothing to do with you.
  • The manager in question, his name is Francis. Hes a really sweet guy, but Saturday he took it too far by cornering me in the delivery trucks and telling me about his personal sex life. I won't tell exactly what he said because it's too graphic for the forum.
  • So, word through the grapevine at work is they're forcing Francis to put in his two weeks. He kept giving me dirty looks today. I can't wait to feel a bit safer and less anxious at work. I honestly can't wait to get decent sleep without nightmares again.
  • Good on you for reporting - that takes bravery! I'm glad you will feel safer, and I'm glad your higher ups stood up for you.

  • A bit of an update. It's been over a month and Francis has not left. I'm a bit disappointed. I still have nightmares about him. Sundays are usually my days without worrying about him while I work but he worked on Sunday. My heart sank when I walked in and saw him. I ended up being placed as what's known as the HD Split (HD-Home Delivery) it was my first time on HD and my manager John made sure I was good, but soon had to leave me under Francis's supervision. He didn't bother me on the split, but once the unloading was done upstairs, I was sent down to the 800 belt to help them finish loading the trucks. Francis was managing the 800 and he instantly lit up as soon as he saw I was sent to help. He asked if I had gotten overwhelmed on the HD and I said yes. He kept trying to talk but I brushed him off. He always stares me in the eye and smiles real big when he talks to me and he doesn't do it to anyone else. He also always laughs at what I say. He sent all the guys on the belt home and kept me. When I worked for him before the incident, he'd always send everyone else but me home early. Maybe I'm just overthinking things, but half of me thinks he has a thing for me. I love my job, and I try not to let him affect me at work.
  • He has a thing for you. Trust your gut. I am so sorry you are dealing with this.

  • I am so sorry you are going through this! You need to make it clear you are not comfortable working with him at any point in time. If nothing has been done go higher. Tell them you'll report to the media (whether you do or not is really up to you) if nothing's done about it. There are laws against sexual harassment, not just company policies. Take self defense courses. Any kind of your choosing. Personally I've taken the standard self defense courses plus karate and tae kwon do. Kick boxing has always been a thought in my mind. Taking care of yourself is important :x
  • Are you seeing a counselor about the nightmares sweetheart? :(

It's going to sound weird but watch some videos of cats hissing and snarling and screaming and then practice it yourself. It's fun and if you get good at it you get a crazy take-no-**** glint in your eye that makes everyone think you're Wolverine...

If he is showing a predictive behavior in sending the other people home early then alert management immediately. If he tries to do it again then counter ASSERTIVELY by asking another coworker to stay with you both or you can volunteer to leave and ask another coworker to stay instead. Then WALK OUT. If not all of you need to stay, then it DOES NOT have to be you who stays every time. If he gets angry about this then something is wrong and you're NOT just overthinking things.

If you end up working with him again and he asks about you getting overwhelmed, say you are fine and that management just asked you to help in another department. Your attitude could be that he just happened to be there and he doesn't matter a wit in your life. If he's not responsible for training you then you don't need to admit any possible weakness to him.

If you absolutely feel the need to take self defense courses then Krav Maga is a no frills, all grit end-it style that the armed forces use. A friend in the army also emphasizing learning to grapple because most fights end up on the ground. :(
  • I definitely agree on taking self defense classes would be a good idea. As well as continuing to pursue the issue with management.

Another idea for outside of work, getting a concealed carry permit for a gun. I know you cannot take it into work with you, but it would be added protection outside of work. I just finished getting mine, and it makes a huge difference knowing you can defend yourself completely. I would recommend that every woman should get one. I know everyone has their own opinions on this topic, which I have no disagreement with. The short of my opinion is ‘If I ever get into trouble and call 911, most likely I’m needing someone with a gun, so I might as well have a gun on me, and if I need it I will have it.’ Where I live it would take law-enforcement at least 5 minutes to get to me, if I’m lucky, more likely 10-20 minutes, and a lot can happen in that amount of time. It’s just another idea nobody has mentioned yet.

I will be praying you get a solution for this issue.
  • Kind of a dead thread now, but I feel the need to update for those that may be following:

Francis was suspended for sexually harassing another girl in the exact same way as me. I talked to Micaiah, another manager when he joined my conversation with my friends Shaura and Brad after work and Brad had asked him about where Francis has been. Micaiah said he was on suspension for sexual harassment. I then asked him if he had heard about the incident with Francis in December and he said yes, he had, and I told him that it had happened to me. He then said that the other girl had been told, almost word for word, what I had been told. And there's no way she could've known about what happened to me and what was said, she's only been there a little under a month. Right now, he's on suspension, he's best friends with the guy that can make the final decision about firing him or ending his suspension and demoting him to package handler again. If he comes back as a package handler, then I won't feel as intimidated and would be able to take a stand should anything happen. I hope he learns his lesson if he is brought back after suspension, but most people want him fired. Me included.

  • Another Update:

I've just returned from a week in Memphis, Tennessee. My grandmother isn't doing so well. While I was trying to enjoy the time I was there, I was informed that Francis has been allowed to return to work and keep his management position. I work on the 800 belt now, which was his belt before he was suspended. I don't know if they'll move me or him. Then when I return home I find out that the person I left to watch my house and animals trashed my house and bedroom and didn't properly take care of my animals. I left detailed instructions and they were ignored. He denies any wrongdoing. This past week has just been frustrating. I haven't had anxiety in a while and now it's back in full force :(
  • I'm sorry that you are going through this.

There has already been a lot of good advice shared above. Based on what you've said, I'm guessing that Francis is friends with the building HR manager. If you continue to be in uncomfortable situations and his treatment of you doesn't change, keep records of the interactions and don't be afraid to go up the HR chain in the company. You have every right to do this if you believe that the building HR manager cannot be impartial or their friendship is a conflict of interest.

The link below is a great resource on your options. The most important thing if you plan to report again is to have as much documentation as you can. I know that documenting everything may seem difficult and force you to replay uncomfortable situations in your mind, but it could also help you feel more in control by actively preparing for your next step. Also ask other coworkers you trust to help you with documentation. If they are present when he asks you to stay after everyone else is dismissed, ask them to write what they witnessed and sign and date the document. Having this will only strengthen your case.

  • Oh honey. You are so strong and so brave. You’re not alone there is a bigger picture with whome love and cherrish you. It’s never a good time to go through what you have and for as long as you have! But you have proven within your updates that you are a strong woman!

I would keep records, a notebook, record times/location and what was said. Also speak to a therapist to help your brain also cope with the mental health this will be having on you.

I’m so proud of you for taking a stand!!

  • @Looper I was actually fired on August 5th. It was an incident involving this manager. I met a new man in June and after I was fired I became a stay at home mom to his 1 yr old. I miss my job very much, despite the amazing amount of stress sometimes it was peaceful for me.
