Oral Surgery - Words of encouragement please!
  • Who here has had oral surgery done before? Specifically on wisdom teeth removal? I got my top two wisdom teeth pulled by two different dentists, two different summers, just like any regular tooth pull. My lower right wisdom tooth is VERY decayed and needs to come out asap but my dentist isn't comfortable pulling it because of the hooked roots. When she pulled my upper right one, the x ray didn't show how hooked the roots were because they curved away from the camera. The roots literally looked like fish hooks on the end of my tooth! The dentist was so shocked, she said she had never seen that before. She went around the office showing everybody lol We all took pictures of it :)) But that brings me to my lower right one. She took Xrays and the hooks on the it were visible and VERY curved. Maybe more-so than the upper one. And because it was a job and a half to get the upper one out (LOTS of tugging and several instrument changes... Lordy i was sore for a long time), she said she doesn't want to risk trying it. So she referred me to an oral surgeon and i am calling to schedule the appointment tomorrow but i am terrified :'( Having the first two pulled was traumatizing enough and the healing period was torture! I have no clue what to expect. Even though i am only having problems with the bottom right, i am going ahead and getting both bottom ones removed at the same time. I don't know if i need to expect longer healing times, stitches, my family recording me doing stupid things while hopped up on laughing gas? I am so over thinking this :'( There is also the possibility that the bottom right one is forming an abscess, which is why it's important that i get it removed asap. Anyone have any words of encouragement? (Both teeth are already exposed/protruding if that makes a difference). I am such a wimp when it comes to pain AND anything dental related.

  • I can’t offer any encouragement, I can’t even go to the regular dentist without being heavily sedated (I may or may not have hit/bit a dentist or two...or ten when I was younger and have severe anxiety issues with dentists). But I am surprised they just pulled the teeth, they sent me directly to an oral surgeon, knocked me completely out, and cut mine out. Mine were exposed as well, I think I was 19? But yeah, I would ask why not cut them out and put you under since you know you have had issues with the top ones. I had stitches when I had mine done and had to eat soft foods for about a week, limited physical activity because of the surgery for about a week. The younger you are, they say the faster your healing times are.

  • A few things. Ask your primary care or dentist for something for anxiety the night before the appointment. Second, you sound to be having sedation. This will cut down on pain because you will be relaxed during the procedure. Third, the anti inflammation medicine in ibuprofen will help more than any pain med for actually helping with pain. Set timers don't let that lapse. Lastly, if you can plan for 2 days to lay in bed and watch TV... You'll be uncomfortable, but you notice that less if you're napping.

  • @FallenShadows714 oh my lol I was never that bad. I would just cry :)) I'm better now-a-days but still not the most fun activity haha. They pulled the top left one because it was fully grown but it had a sharp point that was cutting up my cheek. I was at camp and had to drive an hour and a half into a dentist i had never been before and they pulled it for me. The hooks weren't terrible on that one but it did have an extra one. Then last year i had the top right one pulled because it was also fully grown in and was offsetting my jaw from colliding with the bottom teeth and was causing pain. They didn't see how bad the roots were because they hooked away from the x Ray camera. The bottom two are the ones i have having removed surgically. I'm not looking forward to the whole soft food diet thing :)) I wanna eat all the foods!

@Seaswell I have two full bottles of Ibprofen so i will be all set there and i have tylenol i can take on top of it. My appointment is set for Tuesday the 18th and I already took work off on Tuesday and Wednesday and i don't work Thursday (well, i might at my second job if there are a lot of people signed up for the workshop but my mom or someone can probably cover that shift if needed), and my Friday cleaning job can be done Saturday or Sunday if needed, so i should be set on rest days lol I think the only part i am really anxious about is the sedation. I hate going under. I have only been under anesthesia of any kind twice in my 23 years of life (Once in 2006 to get my tonsils and adenoids removed, and once in 2018 to have my stomach and esophagus scoped). I realize it's probably gonna be way different but it still freaks me out.

  • AHayes, I feel you. I absolutely hate dentists with a purple passion, due to a traumatic tooth removal as a child. I had four fully impacted wisdom teeth surgically removed at 18. It wasn't as bad as going to the dentist, mainly because I don't remember anything. The anesthesia/sedation was way beyond laughing gas. Apparently I had mother clutching her pearls with what was coming out of my mouth afterwards :)) Like Fallen, I was knocked out and stitched up by an oral surgeon. The surgery pain wasn't too bad, but please follow all aftercare instructions. After a few days I was feeling froggy, didn't follow instructions, and ended up with four dry sockets. My husband had two of his out last year at age 45, and he came out okay as well, although he was tired of soft food after a few days - he wanted a hamburger!

  • @RipshinCreekFarm I am so paranoid about getting dry socket :-SS I will follow the instructions to the letter lol I'm thankful that i only have two teeth coming out so that might help lessen healing time vs having all four out at once. I'm probably gonna live on potato soup for a week once they're out :)) When i got my upper right one pulled last year, i got home and really wanted a quesadilla so i had my dad bring one home. I ate it and then was immediately paranoid about it lol My brain just like to over think things. I am also dreading the "after" effects of the sedation :)) I told my dad NO CAMERAS! I'll be sure to post an update once I'm "sober" again :))

  • Hey @ahayeshorses don’t worry! I had all four removed at the same time due to them all protruding and being impacted. I feel like the pain prior to surgery was far greater than not opting for surgery at all...just think how much better your quality of life will be once it’s all said and done!

I was warned by the surgeon that there is a minute chance for nerve damage in the face if the roots are wrapped around the nerves, so I would ask you specialist about that. That being said, if it’s rotten as you say it is- the tooth may be broken into pieces to make extraction safer.

Also when I went- they didn’t sedate me because I had never gone under anesthesia before and the surgeon didn’t know how I would react. The procedure took two hours, I was aware of what was going on (could hear the tools breaking one of my teeth and grasping the others, but it didn’t bother me)but it only felt like 15 minutes.

The nice thing about being awake is I was able to tell the surgeon by tapping when I needed more novocaine which in my opinion helped the rest of my day go smoother and transition to pain management smoothly.

So you could be grateful for little things like that ☺️ The only complaint I had was that I had never taken high dose painkillers before. I was only given 3 days worth and I feel that it wasn’t enough. My recovery was a little rough, mostly because I had all four out at the same time.

    Best of luck to you!

  • It's honestly not that bad. My roots were really long and my teeth were growing sideways and almost down, so they put me out and had to break them out. (My roots were curved as well.).

Everything went fine at the oral surgeon. (They're really good at what they do.) I totally don't remember going home, but apparently I proposed to a dog...woof. He was apparently very handsome.

I was fine in a couple of days and back at college. A little swollen and bruised, but good to go.

  • When's your surgery, if you don't mind me asking? I'm going in the 28th to have my wisdom teeth and 2 molars removed, 5 total. Only 1 wisdom tooth is erupted, the other 2 (oddly enough, I was only born with 3) are still under the gums, they'll have to cut a small piece of bone out to get the one. :/ I've never had any kind of surgery, never been put under sedation, never had an IV, never even had stitches before.

  • Mine is the 18th. I am just getting the two bottom wisdom teeth out, thankfully. I'm hoping it's just a simple in and out surgery with no complications or anything wild. I have been under anesthesia before and have had an IV but i have never had stitches before!

  • Stitches are no biggie, and they don't hurt. They put them in while you're out, so you won't feel it. Removing them is just a slight tug. Feels a little odd, but didn't hurt.

  • I had my wisdom teeth (all 7 because apparently you can have extras) taken out a little over a year ago, ice packs and anti-inflammatories will be your best friends for a few days! The biggest thing to do after is follow all the instructions you're given. And you might not even have to go back to have stitches taken out, mine were the kind that dissolved on their own after a week or two.

I only took normal tylenol and none of the T3s I was given, the pain just wasn't bad enough that I needed them.

I had the twilight sedation, and didnt say/do anything strange after the surgery, it just made me really sleepy.

  • I had 4 taken out all at once. Was put under because I don’t do well with needles LOL. You will do great- I kinda wished I had a video of my waking up just so I have proof I didn’t do anything crazy like everyone says!

Everyone has super good advice! The only thing I would add to the list is to maybe try sleeping upright for the first 48 hours. If you have a recliner chair or something you can sleep in and keep your head upright, it should help keep the swelling down because gravity is your friend :)

Good luck and fingers crossed for a speedy and uneventful recovery!

  • Thanks for all the helpful advice y'all :x Last night the pain in my lower right wisdom tooth was so bad that two Tylenol, two ibuprofen, an ice pack, and a mini handheld massage tool thingy did basically nothing to help :'(( I can't wait to get it out! Been dealing with on and off pain from that tooth for months! I kinda wanna ask if they can either save the teeth or take pictures because i wanna see what they look like when they come out. Especially the roots!

@goldensun i really hope that's the kind of sedation i get because i have heard some crazy stories from people i know about the weird things they did after surgery and i don't want any part of it :))

  • Good luck. Hopefully it won't be as bad as you think. The oral surgeons will be very good at taking those kind of teeth out. Yes follow the instructions on the after advice - dry socket is bad. If you don't smoke and are generally fit and well you should be ok.
I am a dentist myself in the UK. Sedation is lovely and helps a lot :)

  • Well y'all, surgery went very well! Got home and settled a few hours ago but was still a but groggy. I've been changing my gauze every 30 minutes but i can't remember when I am allowed to just leave the gauze out lol I was still in lala land when they were talking to my dad but he went back to work so i might have to text him. I am now attempting to very carefully eat little bits of applesauce but i am so stinking paranoid about dry socket and it's proven difficult to do so with the gauze in :)) Right now there is no pain, just a little sore, but my entire lower jaw/lip/tongue is still VERY numb. I think it's only just now starting to try and wake up but it still feels like my lower lip and chin are three times their normal size (which is so far the most annoying part... I can't wait til the numbness goes away). Thanks for all the advice and encouragement! Hopefully I can heal up nicely in the next week!
