Do any RS have snowflake?
-
I know there was a thread on here somewhere about what rank specials carried which hidden genes but I cannot find it.
Is snowflake even a hidden gene? I have several rank specials and have no idea what to do with them.IAM WolfDen #50695 -
Snowflake is a hidden gene, yes. Marzipan Stollen is Hom snowflake, The Accomplishments of Like-Minded People is Hom snowflake (one-time only RS though), and Ghost of Christmas Present or Future (can’t remember which) is Hom snowflake but missing a copy of Appaloosa. I’m not aware of any that are specifically het snowflake.

Christmas Future is hom snowflake. You can also get regular creates that are het snowflake...and while very rare, you can also get regular creates that are hom snowflake.

The genetics are confusing me. How did I breed two appaloosa and not get an app foal? Snowflake does require appaloosa to show right?IAM WolfDen #50695 -
Snowflake is a homozygous recessive gene, meaning a horse needs two copies. Looking at the parents of this foal, only the mother is homozygous snowflake so the foal would only be heterozygous (you cannot tell if the father is a carrier, since he could be heterozygous and Appaloosa and it won’t show).
As to why the foal is not Appaloosa, both parents are only heterozygous Appaloosa. That means each parent only has a 50% chance of passing down their copy of Appaloosa. You had a 25% chance of having a few spot Appaloosa (what a horse with two copies of Appaloosa is called because most times you won’t see many spots), a 50% chance of having a regular Appaloosa (one copy of Appaloosa), and a 25% chance of the foal not inheriting either colt of Appaloosa from the parent. Your foal just happened to hit the 25% chance of not inheriting either copy from either parent. The foal IS heterozygous snowflake, thanks to the mother. You can have a non Appaloosa that carries snowflake, either heterozygously or homozygously. -
Thank you for the explanation. I didn't realize it was recessive or that I needed two copies. I tried to select the appaloosa gene to research it but got an error message. I will do some more research nowIAM WolfDen #50695
