Questions/opinions wanted from those who boost horses
  • I have never boosted before and I would love some advice from those who have experience.

    1. How much of a boost is required to turn a perfect foundation mare into an exceptional producer?

    2. How much is required/is it worth it to boost a second generation red papered mare that is superior to her red papered dam to blue?
  • I've Boosted Cherry Drops and Yule Logs to red with 2% boosts.

I haven't tried to boost a red to a blue but I got bit pretty hard Un-spelding and boosting a couple of yellow fillies to match with their red dames because they were Christmas straw fillies. One of them boosted in 2%. The other is still yellow after 5 % and is AGA my unboosted Yule Log mare. I love them, but I think it's pretty unpredictable with lined foals right now and I don't plan on doing it again.
  • For your first question, you will need a full 5% to turn a perfect foundation into an exceptional producer. For your second question, it could take anywhere from 1% to 3%.

  • Yep, exactly what FallenShadows said!

As for Looper, for lined horses the trick is to work out where they actually are to know what a boost will do. I wouldn't for instance waste a boost on something that couldn't even pass BA. Perfect foundations, and RS's, will boost to red after just 1%, but of course they are only that 1% better than yellow/c, and nowhere near exceptional level yet

  • I reserve boosting only for super unique combinations I’m unlikely to get again—because I can’t get access to a parent again, or because it’s a rare combination (can you say brindle?). I will also give a 1% boost in my gen 3 herd at the moment because I now have a gen 3 Star colt and want the rest of the boys in that gen to be AGA. So I did some boosting on the boys that were young enough and will use them to replace all the older stallions who are inferior.

I am MUCH more likely to spend GMTs to make a foal who meets my benchmark standards into a more ideal fit for my herd than I am to boost horses. I also tend to GMT excess colts who meet my standards into fillies rather than snip or sell them. For me, boosting is pretty rare.
