ISO bootstrap mares
  • I’ve never done bootstrapping before I only do lined breeding but I’ve found that I need some good show foals and I think the best way to get them is through bootstrapping. So I’m looking to grow a herd of bootstrapped mares. If anyone has any available I would love to buy them.
Also if anyone has some pointers or anything I should know about bootstrapping it would be really helpful because I don’t know much about it.
    Thanks!

  • Your goal with bootstrapping is to get super high quality show ponies. In general, find a star-papered stallion you like and cross him with lower-papered or miscellaneous mares. I run all my colts through BA before even opening them. The mares I save if they paper higher than their dams. I'm just about a year into bootstrapping, and I'm at the point where I'm getting picky about genes and bone and BAing borderline mares. I started with foundations or unevenly bred main line horses (for example, 3g mares that snuck into the 2g pasture), and now I overflowing with gold and blue mares (though only a small number are passing BA). Everything you don't want to save for future breeding gets spayed/gelded and tucked into a show barn.

I have these five gold mares I would gift to you if you would like them. Only Molted has passed BA, but the other mares have given me very nice foals, including some intacts.

If you'd like any of these boys that have passed BA, you are more than welcome to them - they are only colts and are probably on the low end of stars, but they're available.

  • I haven't been doing bootstrapping stuff very long, but I have a few Blue mares that're breedable this season that I can give you if you'd like them.

I also have this *Star guy (no idea where he falls in the range of stars, but he tested AGA his sire :-?? ) you can have if you'd like him.

  • I have a ton of untested bootstrapped mares and some nice Star colts who have passed BA. I do comparison to verify what level the colts are if they pass, so I can hook you up with a mid or high papered Star boy if you want. :)

This boy is a mid-range *Star, NOT BA, but his PT is 13.3 so I kept him intact.

Or there's this boy who passed BA is a high *Star but has a slightly lower PT at 13.1.

  • @FeldingFields I would love them, they are amazing! Thank you for helping me understand better too!
@darkpixe I would love the mares! I can add you to my chat too if needed!
@JustaSaddletramp I’m not sure how bootstrap stallions work, is it better to be papered higher or have a better PT? And how do you tell what range they paper in to start with? I found these stallions on the sales market and bought them, are they good?

  • I have lots of high PT spelds in the auction today if you want some show ponies. :) There are also a few blue mares in there.
I always have lots of mares I can pop a few in one of Dinascar's sales chats for you.
If you want a little stud I have lots of good ones.

  • @Gracie3B The main way I tell exactly where a colt is quality-wise is comparison testing, but I know a lot of people just go by PT.

I could be all wet, but I've gone about my boot program mostly by literal trial and error. I had a really high *Star boy, Rogue Night, that I comp tested to every star stallion I could, even bought Star colts just to comp test their relative quality without finding one that was superior to him, so he was my benchmark for very high *Star. My current top stallion, Gossiping Heimdall, tested AGA Rogue and none of his AGA sons were superior to Rogue, so I figure he's top end too. Over the last year I managed to pretty well get a range within my herd so I know my other boy Sensai Wolf is a mid-range *Star, superior to some *Star boys but still worse than Rogue or Gossiping or any of their AGA sons. With those solid points to go from, I've got my boys pretty well figured as far as comparison testing goes. You'll see a lot of my colts tested against Sensai, and mostly anything lower than him I sell or snip, depending on if I have stall space.

Now, all that said, the fun part of breeding in this game is that PT (which is JUST showing ability) doesn't always go with the high comp tests (breeding ability). Lol I've learned the hard way that a lot of my high PT boys don't comp test as high *Star and don't pass BA if they are by one of my high *Star boys. Some do, my top Rogue son tested AGA and is 13.5 if I remember correctly, but I've been trying a while to finally get a very high *Star boy who is also high PT like him. It was hard for me because most of my boot herd started out very low papered with some top lines thrown in and I got horses that were just all over the place and it took me a long time to realize it.

As for your boys, looking at those three and their lines, I would guess (and I could be wrong, but I'm willing to try it right out in public anyway :D ) that the top one there by comparison testing would be Runaway Secrets. He has great lines that throw a lot of top-end horses, and no, I'm not just saying that because my Rogue is one of them. :)) From what I've seen in my herd, which has included all of Runaway Secrets' lines at some point and still does, most of his lines do very well on both PT and comparison testing so he should too. Same thing for your second boy there, three of his four main lines are top end, high PT and high paper lines. The third boy I'm not as sure of. His lines aren't familiar to me and they haven't been compared to horses I know, so I'm guessing a bit more on him, but my first impression is the other two likely test superior to him. I'd love to know how they actually do test, I'll even send you 20k hbs to help do it if you want. ;;)

And if I were you, I'd take DinaChill up on the offer, she breeds awesome show ponies! :D

  • I have popped some gold mares in Dinascar's sales chat for you - all established girls. I am in the middle of breeding so at present I have not bred them - pick them up quick or I may end up breeding them with all the others ;)

  • You will need to comparison test all those guys and use the best one. You can guess a little by looking at pedigree but who's to say the colt with better parents might be at the low end of his parents range and the one with the lower quality parents might be at the high end of his range and actually test superior. :)
As a little tip - I wouldn't go with a stud that has too much white as you will be breeding him back to his offspring and you may end up with lethal white.

  • @DinaChill I was able to get on last minute before the auction ended and picked up as many as time allowed! Thank for all the amazing horses! I will look around and buy ones with less white and comp test them to each other!
@JustaSaddletramp wow thank you that was very helpful information! And I comp tested runaway and the other to the dominant white one and they actually tested worse which is weird, I thought they’d test sup also. But I’ll be looking on the sales list for one better than than the last one with less white too!
@darkpixe I added you! Thank you!

  • @Gracie3B LOL Well, I didn't know the white boy's lines, but evidently they're pretty good too! The colts testing results you got were the opposite of how I thought they would go, but that's typical for my experience in the game. Every time I think I know what's going on, it reminds me I don't. :))

It just did that to me with two crops of foals, too. On my alt the 'best of pasture' failed SBA while many others passed, and on my main my BOP had a lower PT than most of the similarly bred colts from the same pasture. Lol PT and comparison testing really do have nothing to do with each other, so getting a horse that does well on both isn't easy.
