Question about straws
-
So I've been trying to organize my straws and figure out what mares to flush next season, and I had a thought. Several of these straws are several months old, and there's been dozens of gene sales since I got them. So say I get a straw from a stallion, then months later the owner adds a new gene to the stallion. Will the straws carry that new gene, or only the genes the stallion had when I bought the straws? And if it only carries the original genes, how can I figure out what the stud originally had?
-
I didn't think stallions could be GMT'd or RGS gened after having straws pulled... maybe I'm wrong...Love,
Chase ♡ -
Ammit was looking at that, I seem to recall, but I don't think she got it done.
-
@SpryOfJune, I wasn't sure that they could either, but then again, there isn't really a reason why they can't be altered. The straws aren't actual foals, so you can have straws while the stallion still has no foals. Which is why I was asking. I'd hate to buy a straw and then lose it later because the owner added a closed gene that I don't have. But it's not a major concern, just a curious question.
@ConfluenceFarms, glad to know I'm not the only person that was curious about this. -
They can be GMTed after straws are pulled (or eggs), but you can not do a sex change if they have more than 3 pulled. The straws/eggs will have the newly added genes.
I just GMTed a 15 yo mare with more than 100 eggs pulled.ID 108 -
@Maribo, do you know what happens if a closed gene is added after the straw is sold? Like, does the straw become unusable or does it go away?
-
No, they are still usable. If the owner of the straw doesn't have the gene, I assume they just wont be able to use it.ID 108
