Australian Bushfires
  • Hey Guys,

I would think that it is safe to say that most players/breeders in this community are from overseas or non-Australian. So far I only know of a small handful of fellow aussies on here (@Malaayna2, @Cheers, @Goobani, @Squishlime, @kintara, @horsey2).

But nonetheless, I feel this topic should be applicable to everyone in this community.

As many of you would know by now, Australia is currently facing the worst drought on record, many regions have reached Day Zero, or are close to. And since late August, early September 2019, the worst fire season in our country's history.

Just to give you some stats:

    - Since the beginning of the bushfire season, nearly 6 million hectares of land has been burnt. A land area larger than the whole of Belgium. Compared to London, the total area hit by the bushfires covers from Birmingham in the north-west all the way to Hastings on the south-east coast.

    - One single fire, the Gospers Mountain mega-blaze which hit NSW, was
approximately seven times the size of Singapore.

    - In New South Wales alone, more than 4 million hectares of land is on fire or has been burnt. This is more than four times the size of the fires which ripped through Brazil's Amazon rainforest last year.

    - It is estimated 500 million animals have died in the fires. This includes many species native to Australia such as koalas and kangaroos, and there are fears entire species have been wiped out.

    - Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from cities and towns in New South Wales and Victoria ahead of worsening conditions this weekend.

    - At least 20 people have died since September

    - Over 1500 homes have been destroyed, and over 4,600 insurance claims have been filed totalling nearly $290 million dollars (AUD)

    - Some regions of the country recorded air quality measurements 20 times above the hazardous level. At one point breathing in the air quality in Sydney was the equivalent of smoking 34 cigarettes a day.

    - In New South Wales alone, blazes have created a fire front in the state that — if put into a straight line — would stretch from Sydney, across the Indian Ocean, and into Afghanistan.

    - The dust and ash from the fires have spread across the ocean and as far as New Zealand (~ 2000km away from Sydney)

    - NSW has approx 70,000 firefighters that are on the ground - a majority of which are volunteers (unpaid)

    - Nearly 4,000 people were evacuated to the beach as the out of control fires destroyed the coastal town of Malacoota. Harrowing pictures of blood-red skies and an 11 year old boy driving his family's boat have since gone viral

    - Recently there has been a multi-state evacuation of North-Eastern Victoria, NSW's South Coast and the Shoalhaven Region. It is the largest peacetime evacuation in Australian history.

    - On Jan 5th the Prime Minister Scott Morrison or ScoMo announced that for the first time the Australian Defence Force would finally get involved with the crisis as he declared war on the fires. Almost 4 months after the crisis began.

    - Australia is only one month into summer, with the season expected to worsen till the cooler winter months (roughly April)

This is a lot of harrowing statistics, but this is actually normal for Australia, and has become apart of life for Australians. Our country needs fire to survive and evolve, many of our flora species have adapted to fire and in many cases need it to distribute seeds. But unfortunately due to lack of decisive and necessary fire precaution practices such as back-burning, and the increase in temperatures and lack of rain and water, the country is now burning.

I would recommend that if you haven't seen or heard much about these fires that you google it and look at the images that are defining this crisis. Warning though as some pictures may be distressing to some people.

But in more positive news, an Australian comedian, Celeste Barber started a fundraising page for The Trustee for NSW Rural Fire Service & Brigades Donations Fund. This fundraising page was started on the 3rd of January and in the two days it has been operational has almost raised $21 million dollars. That is roughly $10,000 a minute and has shows no signs of stopping soon. This is open to all countries around the world, and we as Australian's would really appreciate any donations from anyone.

    Thanks guys,

And to my fellow Aussies, stay safe!

  • I've been following the fires on social media and they are terrifying! It's devastating to think about the people and animals who are losing their livelihoods. I'm sending my prayers and support. Stay safe down there, Aussie friends!

  • To put some of that in perspective, in particular for some Americans who are as unclear on what a “hectare” as I still am after 12 years here.

12.35 million acres of Australia have burned since September. Last year the California fires were 250,000 acres and 2 million acres of the Amazon burned, just to give some further perspective.

The half million animals dead is wildlife. I have not yet heard an estimate of the livestock or pets that may have been trapped in the fires. We do know for sure that large portions or entire populations of endangered animals were affected by the fires, several species of birds, reptiles and small mammals have likely been wiped out or made “functionally extinct” since September.

Just like parts of the Western US, some Australian species do require fire to regenerate. However, these fires are burning so hot and hard that those species will also be destroyed rather than regenerated. We have had many years of drought now which has meant preventative burns have been unsafe to perform in the cooler, wetter months. As a result there is a huge build up of dry fuel in these bush areas and fires have gotten quickly out of control.

Pray for rain please! We need this drought to break nation wide, as many areas are in drought but not currently burning.
  • My prayers go out to Australia and all our friends there.

  • The fires are so terrifying and terrible for all the people and animals that live there. Praying to all the gods that Australia gets some much needed rain and a lot of it.

  • I am from Western Australia Luckily My area is free from fire. I have family over east My heart cries for those that have been impacted by these fires. I can not imagine anything more frightening then having to face these fires. I especially feel for the animals both domestic and wild and the terror they must be feeling a they try to escape from the areas ablaze. Western Australia has so far been largely spared from the flames. We do have a few fires burning in WA one of which has cut the states only sealed road that links us with the Eastern States alot of our food and medical supplies come into the state by road. Currently they are all stopped at a road house on the nullabour plain as the road is closed. This road was closed just before Christmas also for a few days causing shortages in some items. Like Strawberries normally $1:99 to $3:50 a punnet being priced at $7 to $9 a punnet if available at all. We have been warned that we will face a food and medication shortages due to not only road closures but crops being destroyed by fires this could well be the biggest humanitarian crisis Australia has faced as a nation. I not only Pray for Rain across our beautiful country and ask for your prayers also. But more importantly when this is eventually over when ever that may be. These people and regions affected will need our support by putting money back into their communities . So take that holiday to Australia visit those towns buy their petrol their goods and use their services they will need to generate an income to survive. May the gods Bless this land her people and her Animals especially. Help them to survive and start to rebuild, repair. Aussies are a resilient bunch and we will rise and survive but we will need a helping hand even if some are to proud to ask.
  • I'm fairly inland NZ and its a shock to see such a large effect all the way over here, can't fathom how terrifying it must be in Australia right now. I sure hope you all stay safe and the wind is replaced by rain soon.
  • Prayers for rain, for strength, for the animals and humans.
  • I am in Tasmania, we have a couple of fires going at the moment and being on a small island it doesn’t take much before it effects people you know.
Most of my family and friends are in Victoria and South Australia and it is effecting all of them.
    Just devastating :(
Unfortunately we have just hit summer and decent rain is a long distance away. These fires are going to continue burning for months...and don’t get me started about the incompetency of our prime minister.
