I'm looking for some advise!
-
Would it be bad if I bred by just generation vs generation and paper? I want to make the best line possible for what I'm doing but at the same time I've got 4 lines and would love to condense! There isnt usually a big want for my ponies anyway so idk what I should do!
-
Do what will make you happy! If you want to just breed by generation and that will make you happy and things easier for you, then do it. It’s your account, your ponies, there is no right or wrong way to do things.
-
I always do generation but I do try to do same paper but isn't a deal breaker for me. Just remember that your chances of foals passing SBA will be less if not equal quality
-
I breed by generation but I don't worry about paper. Do what works for you! Personally, I find that breeding by generation helps me to keep fewer horses, especially studs, because I only keep the highest quality at each gen.ID 43830
It's nice to be back! :)

I'm with HTRanch on this one! I breed by generation and let the chips fall where they may!
-
I do gen and paper. I've gotten to gen 9 at this point :)
-
Thank you guys! I may give it one more breeding season and see how they turn out! I cant do anything with my normal, non- fantasy line yet as the girls have to age up! My bootstrap line is going great! But I've hit gen 3 on the other 2 lines and the papers arent advancing even with full pasture bonus (gen 1 red/b, gen 2 blue/a, but gen 3 isnt papering higher than blue/a) so I'm just not sure if it's worth spelding all these ponies that paper the same but pass sba...I may just throw them all together at gen 3 and let the chips fall from there!

I breed by generation but not by paper. I have B (and 1 A) founation studs over Yellow and Red foundation mares. My 2nd generation is all A over Red and Blue. 3rd is A or Star over mostly Blue and Gold. 4th is mostly Star over Blue and Gold. Almost all my gen 3 Stars and Golds have my A papered foundation stud at least once in the lineage. Normal lines I don't expect to see Star/Gold until 4th gen.#28036Thanked by 1Amgr1992

Ok I've decided! Gen 3 and up are all gonna be smushed together! Hopefully all my fantasy genes mix well into one, no more than 100 mare, line! Right now I have about 60 lined mares that are split between gen 2 B and A studs to get those genes mixed in good! After I cycle through the boys in a few months all gen 2 will be retired

It's rare to get star/gold papers at gen 3 (and even at gen 4) so don't worry about that. If you want your lines to advance I would just worry about your stallions (or your mares if you want to spend the hbs to compare them) compare superior to their parents.
Here are the papers I expect at each generation (which might be different for you depending on what foundations you are starting with)
Foundation: B/Red papers
2nd gen: Blue/A papers
3rd gen: Blue/A papers
4th gen: Blue/A with some star/gold
Gen 5: even mix of star/gold and Blue
Gen 6: all star/gold
Right now my 4-6 generations are not at the quality I want, so I'm giving them a rest while I focus in on my gens 1-3. By increasing the quality of the studs (and to a lesser extent the mares) I use at each generation, I hope to get higher quality stock in later generations - at which point star/gold papers at gen 5 will be a hard and fast requirement.
This is why I like breeding by generation - I can continue to set mini-goals for each generation that are a little more achievable but also boost the quality of my overall herd in the long run.
I admire your restraint to only have 100 mares total in a line! I don't think I could do that lol - although from now on I think I will only get 30-acre pastures for each generation.ID 43830

@HTRanch is 100 mares too small? There is around 60 total gen 2 mares and my breeding went like this,
Foundation: C/ Yellow and B/Red
Gen 2: B/Red and A/Blue
Gen 3. A/Blue and ????

Not at all! I really should cut down on my numbers lol.ID 43830

Right now from both foundation lines I have gen 3 A/blue that's why I was asking about combining! And it will be nice to have all my fantasy in one line so i can work on my "brindle foundation" line and my Twin line!y twin line is my boosted stud and boosted the diamond age mares! I only have 6 mares in that line and one stud! This month I'm starting to flush the diamond age mares so I can have as many babies as possible when they pass and that's going to be a "pure" line in the way of there will only be 2 studs genetics (my boy and Alohomora's Valor and only my 2 girls!
-
I have an A papered boosted foundation stud, if you're interested in expanding that gene pool a little more.#28036
-
@Haltanny I would love to! Having 3 different studs is probably a little better than 2!
