So I want to buy a closed gene for my SS, and put it on a foundation horse I just created for them. But if I do that, then I will own the gene and they won't be able to buy the horse when the time comes, right?

How can I do this without spending double? The way I see it I'd currently have to put the gene on one of their current horses (which may be unwanted) AND then put it on the one I want to gift to them.

As much fun as it is to surprise people with closed genes, if you have a specific horse in mind to place it on, the best way to get it to them is to coordinate it with the recipient. Personally, I prefer to err on the side of clear communication vs. surprises.

You can still keep it somewhat of a surprise by asking a third party to inquire on your behalf: "If you were to be gifted Gene XYZ, which of your horses would you want it on?"

I will say, if anyone gifted me with a gene, I would be thrilled with the kindness and thought they put into picking out one of my horses on my behalf, even if it may not be the horse I would choose myself. There will always be more pixel ponies to replace them.

If the newly-decked out horse really, truly didn't fit my breeding plans in its current state, that's what GMTs are for!

I usually choose a horse to put a certian gene on, but surprises is nice sometime.

It wouldn't be a surprise, they mentioned wanting a closed gene - and that they'd like it on a foundation. So there's my conundrum. I've got my foundation, but unless I get an elf to give them the foundie now and then work on the horse while it's in their possession, I need to pay double.

I'd get an elf to gift the horse and tell them not to breed it as their SS will be at work

I went the elf route last year with my SS.

I found the right foundation, GMTed him and put a note on his info page asking that my SS keep him set aside for the season. I left the note vague so they would not know what they were getting until it showed up on the horse.
Then I found an elf to deliver the horse to my SS for me. I then added some closed genes as they became available.

It seemed to go over well and was a ton of fun watching him evolve.

I second Wyld but my point of view comes from having been the giftee, I had my SS gift me a horse last Christmas and the Elf told me to leave her alone... and then when @LairRua revealed herself as my SS she told me to recheck my girl and this was her. Seriously one of the best surprises cause even though I knew she was going to be modified I had no idea what mods were coming.
