Questions about Recessive varnish!
-
Like, so many questions lol ...
1. Is this *new* to the game?
2. Does non-varnish occur randomly in creates?
3. Is there a way to tell if your appy is going to varnish out or not when they are young (3 - 4 yo)?
4. Will we ever be able to GMT it?

It's not new, there's actually an old recessive or something varnish HH from long ago in the HH list.
I don't know if there's a way to know if it occurs randomly in creates.
Most by that age will be slightly lighter, but not all.
I don't think so. It's basically a hidden gene, but harder to control, kinda. And I don't think there's a place for it, besides where snowflake goes, but snowflake is a type of varnish, just moreso.Love,

I'm trying to breed for non-varnish. I love appaloosas and hate seeing their colour fade! I don't have a premium upgrade but if someone were to start a non-varnish buddy chat I'd be in!
You can't GMT varnish, unfortunately.
This was my gold standard. He died at 18 or 19 and didn't have any varnish!
AH3 To The Moon
You can usually tell by 3 or 4 if the horse is going to varnish quickly or not. Here are two 3 year olds that have already started:
AH Galgo
AH Snapper
Versus their half sister, also 3, who has not started to varnish. She MIGHT be no varnish, or maybe just slow-varnish. There's no way to know until they start to fade. It's hugely frustrating.
AH Podengo
Here is an example of slow varnish: the horse IS varnishing, but it has taken a lot longer. He is 13 and just has the start of a dusting. He is the son of that non-varnish appy up there..
