Risky Business Breeding Surprises
-
I was off on a breeding tangent, and realized I bred a homozygous white 1. What a lucky duck this boy is! As someone who managed, repeatedly, to create a lethal white with w20, I was impressed this cutie survived. The goddess Arengee was smiling down on him (and probably laughing a little as she gave him his papers).

"Oh, this cross must be less risky than I remember." * checks White Factor Risks chart * Nope, this is a pretty dicey cross. If I tried to intentionally do this, I would have a lot of sad notifications.
Then I wondered how many other sturdy critters survived the double-whammy of KitW, and ran a search. There are currently three pages of hom KitW on the Forest server, and I own four of them.
Since I have a big herd of White Weddings (my favorite Rank Special), and often only keep 1-2 foals per mare, I often tell my mares "best of luck!" when breeding them on the other months. This is not how I recommend anybody approaches breeding; I am just being honest that I don't cross-examine every breeding pair each month. I usually let my non-roan Kit genes breed themselves out through the generations, as I generally keep the more solid foals.
Now that I am enamored with Phantom, I will more intentionally be selecting for various white factors. This is a great time for me to brush up on the White Factor Risks chart (found in the FAQ User Guide), and make sure I am selecting safer crosses.
Please remember to breed responsibly... and when you don't, share it here! Who is your favorite "how did this one survive" creation?

No w1/w2 or Hom w1 or 2 yet but some of them have various combos of w2/w1, splash, kit m, to and frame. Handful of sab1 :) I breed out of pasture and am pretty careful to avoid possibility of Hom w1 or w2. Only exception is seeing if I can push my CaBM and VoS for the Blue Roan Appie patterns. I'll breed w1 and w2 to my pocket watch boy. :) I think the combos I have are risky enough but still pretty enough to keep me curious.

I don't have a lot of white patterns in any of my lines, but I do have two Kit m x w2 crosses, which is a orange/moderate risk level. Pretty sure I lost a foal that would have been this cross this year.

I have this Hom w10 boy, who if his white factor had been any higher would not have survived. He was a shock, since I forgot the mom had w10 until I bred him...whoops! (The Hom nexus covers it, but I promise it’s there!)

I have one of only 11 (at last count) W and W10 combo horses in game. He was a complete accident when I misread his parents genes and bred them together haha:

I used to have a side project dedicated to the highest risk crosses - w1, w2, w3, and w10. I think I may get out of bootstrapping to start it up again - it was pretty fun!

I wish that Frame appeared somewhere in that lethality chart. Anyone know how to read the raw data chart Ammit provided?Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.Thanked by 1Alohomora

@ Towdolly, frame is always lethal when homozygous. As for the chart. I interpret the numbers along the top under the genes as representing white factor levels, with 1 being WF: none and 6 being WF: extensive. If the block for gene combination/WF is green, the foal lives, if it is red, the foal dies. Adding splash and frame increases the amount of white, and the risk of the cross being lethal.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses. Liver chestnut, DP mushroom, and rose gray riding horses. Dun cobs with all the patterns. Watercolor, Wrong Warp and ice on mixed body types.
