*NOT HAJ related* Conquering my fears
• *This post is extremely personal, but its something that I feel comfortable with sharing. If it isn't allowed let me know, and ill delete what im about to write*

Hello all of you lovelies that are about to read my long post- my names Maria and i have major social anxiety.

So far i've lived with it throughout my life of seventeen years. I let it rule me; i would decline to hang out with friends and i would often look for any oppurtunity to sit in the back of the classroom. I dreaded going to school, i would beg my mother to let me stay home. She often caved. Because i was never at school, my grades quickly declined to C's on a good day, and D's or F's on an average day. Fast forward to last year: I left my regular high school, joined an alternative school, and started to get work done. I didnt go every day, but my attendance was definitely better. My grades shot up to straight A's and B's, and i earned almost nine credits (in a school year students are expected to earn six). I kinda started to come out of my shell, and i even made a friend that has helped me through a lot of my anxiety.

I've decided on what I want to do with my life. I want to become an elementary teacher (horse trainer on the side ;) ). I want to potentially help other children that need a constant positive role model: i want to be better. Because of this, I started talking with my principal and we got in contact with other elementary school principals in the area, and long story short..

I got TWO internships at different schools. my life is finally looking like it will amount to something guys, and its terrifyingly awesome.
• NICE!

I would never have guessed that you have social anxiety from your activities here. I suppose having the computer between you and the other people involved helps?

• That is amazing, and as someone who also has some pretty bad social anxiety I applaud you for making the efforts you have this year. My mom is an elementary school principal (12 years, plus many more as a kindergarten teacher and vice principal), and you would not believe the amount of influence good teachers have on young kids. I wish you the best of luck with your internships, and keep moving forward!

• As someone who also has crippling anxiety (social, general, panic, separation, etc), this is so heartwarming to see! Congratulations! I am currently stepping WAY out of my comfort zone by getting a second job downtown (30 minutes away from my house and i absolutely hate driving on normal roads let alone downtown). And i am leaving for a week to go to Missouri with someone i haven't even met in person yet to help her do photography at the Nationals of the American Horseman Challenge. I can't bring my puppy with me who is being trained as a service dog for my anxiety and even though i am a little excited, i am freaked out about not having her with me and being so far from all my family and friends, somewhere new and with people i don't really know yet... But i keep telling myself it's gonna be so much fun that it'll go by fast :)

Good luck on your internships! Definitely wanna hear updates in the future!

• Well Done! And good for you for taking the initiative. It will have good days and bad days, but you're strong enough to reach your goals!

• @ConfluenceFarms yes ma'am, im way better online than i am in person (minus phone calls. Its almost impossible for me to make calls)

@FallenShadows714 thank you so much, I really appreciate it! It is quite hard, but with the right support and whatnot you can do anything you set your mind to. I cant ever imagine what it would be like to be a principal. I honestly wanna give her major props for everything that she has done, i know that its getting hard to find teachers that genuinely love their job and the students they work with. :x

@AHayesHorses thank you for being so kind and opening up! I know that I dont know you too well, but im so proud of you and the leaps you're making. Im sure you'll have a blast <3 i start this Thursday, so ill definitely post an update :3
@Seaswell thank you so much! :x im a little nervous that I'll make a fool of myself, but im also extremely excited.

@RiverMeadows thanks! <3 This year is going to be extremely difficult, but im so ready to try and better myself and the community
Again, thank you guys so much for taking the time out of your days to respond. Y'all dont know how much it means to me :x
• I've thought for a long time that people with social anxiety (like me!) feel safer on the internet. In reality I've always been the one hiding in the back of the room too, or waiting in the car, or wanting that corner booth way in the back of the restaurant where nobody else sits. These days my health makes going anywhere difficult, but even when I was young I seldom went anywhere but horse events, feed stores, or the library.

Edit to add: Oh, and phones, I forgot to type what I was thinking, OMG. Lol I am in my forties and still hate talking on the phone! I would literally rather dislocate a finger. I've done that many times, it's so much easier for me than a phone conversation unless I'm allowed to just say things like, "Uh huh" or "I know, right?" and not actually talk. :))

Online, though, I've learned I can be me and stand up and be part of the conversation. It's liberating. People who meet me online seldom have any clue that in person I'm shy and a total hermit. I'm not antisocial, quite, but I could play it on tv very convincingly. :D

@MariaChapinFarm3, @AHayesHorses, and any and all others with similar issues, I for one am very proud of you all for getting out there and living life despite your issues. Keep on keeping on, it IS worth it! :x

• First off, congratulations! I really hope you enjoy interning. I think you have great potential to be an excellent teacher. I feel like your experience with social anxiety may give you an extra dose of empathy if you have a student with social anxiety. You will have the opportunity to make school good for a kid. Having a teacher that can say to a child "hey there, kiddo, I know how you are feeling" can make a world of difference.

• Congratulations, Maria! You have so many wonderful skills, and I know you will be an excellent teacher. Your kindness, intelligence, eloquence, friendliness, and generosity will take you far in your classroom. I am very excited for you! ♥️

• That's awesome! It's great to have that breakthrough and understand the purpose your life experiences have created you to fulfill. Having a teacher who understands is going to mean so much to your future students! I had episodes of depression and anxiety in high school and those experiences in part inspired me to become a social worker. Best of luck in your internship!

• Thanks guys!

UPDATE TIME:

Today was my first day! It was extremely stressful (i worked it eight different classrooms. Three kindergarten, one first grade, two fifth grade classes and one fourth grade class, and i helped the librarian)- but everytime things got rough i thought back to this post and what everyone said.. Plus, a kindergartener complimented my mickey mouse shirt, a first grader said that she wanted me to read a book about unicorns with her next week, and another little girl gave me a big hug. It doesnt seem like much, but now I see what teachers and social workers mean when they say that their jobs are so rewarding. I left that school with a giant migraine and a smile on my face lol

• That's incredible! I'm so happy for you! I also struggle with social anxiety, but not quite as much as you've struggled. As one person growing up to another, I am so proud and excited for your future. :x

• Yep! Social work/teaching/any job involving kids or people are so exhausting but so so worth it! I've been working with the same kids for a few years now and it is amazing to look back and think about all they have learned and how much they have grown! I'm glad you enjoyed your first day. Multitasking jobs like that are overwhelming at first, but you'll have it down in no time!
