DP positive?
-
I have these two colts, bred out of foundation mares to build my show crop; before I geld, do you think they carry the DP gene?
Their sire is a King's Ransom stallion, and both homozygous for Sooty, but the choc pally looked relatively darker to me! The silver bay also carries the Pearl gene.
If they are, I'll keep them intact to eventually breed to my other gen2 fillies.
Thanks!AztecArabians

Any horse whose color name is Chocolate Palomino has to be DP. I only breed red based DP, so I'm not sure about the other one.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses. Liver chestnut, DP mushroom, and rose gray riding horses. Dun cobs with all the patterns. Watercolor, Wrong Warp and ice on mixed body types.

The Pali definately carries DP and papered B, but I would geld the Dun, as he only papered C, which is probably the same quality as your foundation stud, and if you are looking to improve your lines, you want your colts to be better than their sires.

Great thank you Ondowa and Kerredans! It didn't click that Choc Pallys would definitely carry DP...silly me!
Okay thank you, I appreciate it!AztecArabians

No star strike. He's not DP. No one in his pedigree is either.
All chocolate palomino and liver chestnuts have at least one copy of DP. In order for the to be chocolate or live they have to have 3 copies if the darkening genes (which are DP, sty, and S+)
A "black checknut" is a liver horse that has four copies. An extremely dark chocolate also has 4 copies but it is harder to notice in chocolates.
Hope the clears it up a bit. I'd be happy to provide example. I have a black based silver DP mare if you'd like to see what they look like----

I am very forgetful so if I owe you anything but am taking to long please send me a PM. I don't get on to play the game as often as I once did but I am usually most active during the 2nd and 3rd week of each month -
Star Strike, DP only effects red pigment. Silver black like you horse can look similar, but the color is caused by diluting the black pigment rather than darkening the red.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses. Liver chestnut, DP mushroom, and rose gray riding horses. Dun cobs with all the patterns. Watercolor, Wrong Warp and ice on mixed body types.

Ah thanks guys!

What about this one? Would he be DP or DPDP?
SS Dark Holiday 2g -
By red based is that only chestnut or does it include bays, duns, etc?
-
He is probably heterozygous DP, since his dam is a Chocolate Palomino. I don't know if Yule Log horses carry DP.
Chestnuts are the only red based horses. For a horse to be bay it has to have at least one dominant E gene and one dominant A gene. I have seen bays referred to as black based, other times I've seen them classed as bay based. Any color horse can carry the DP gene, even black ones, but since black horses have no red hair, it doesn't affect their appearance. It does affect bays and buckskins, but it can be harder to identify visually, and there is no special name for bays with DP and Sooty.
Dun is a dilution gene that affects all base colors. Chestnuts with the dun gene are called Red Duns. If they have 3 darkening genes (2 Sooty and 1 or 2 DP or 1 Sooty and 2 DP) they are termed Liver Red Duns. Bay and Dun create Bay Duns. Black with Dun makes Grullos. Dun and Cream can be found on the same horse, so we have Palomino Duns, Buckskin Duns, Cremello Duns, etc. Horses can also carry both Champagne and Dun and are named in accordance--Gold Champagne Dun, Amber Champagne Dun, etc.De gustibus non disputandum.
