700 stallions....how do you figure out who to keep?
-
I have 700 stallions and no way to use all of them. How do you all figure out who to keep as stallions? I am slowly letting my herd dwindle because I know I can't use most of them. I found it hard to keep up with a big barn.
How do I decide? -
Geld all the things!
No but seriously, stallions you have never bred? Geld. Stallions that still have their foal photos? Geld. Stallions that have the same paper, genes, generation, and similar PT? Keep 2, geld the rest. Bootstrap stallions, keep the highest PT and the ones that test superior to everyone else, snip the rest. SBA on everything that isn’t bootstrap bred (if it’s not already been done). Any colts that paper equal to their sires (without reasonable exceptions, testing superior while being an A out of an A is an exception) should be gelded if you have a surplus (again, keep the highest PT with the most desirable genes). -
Most of my horses have no names. It is gonna take forever.
-
Yep like fallen says geld all the things.
Write down your breeding goal then narrow it down.
-For me I breed grullo with patterns (hj1 does plaid, axiom and nexus, hj2 Ice)
-Narrowing it down all intact breeding horses must be SBA, consistent and gene tested.
I go to the search page clear the spay and gelding and and sort by consistency and jump to the last page and geld/spay them all until I come back to consistent horses. Change the sort to not like Grullo in the colour field and geld the whole list that pops up. Mares then get prefixes and sorted into breeding barns
- I narrowed my breeding goal down to all of the colts must be EE aa DD which is the base for Grullo.
By now I have narrowed my studs down by all the obvious points (other than papers but I do that last to reduce costs) I go sort by stallion and must have e and geld the whole list. Next must have d and geld the list.
-To narrow my breeding goal down more all studs must be superior to sire and Paper in the top 2 paper levels of its generation.
Next I paper every one and then go through each of my stallions (sort by name on the search) and opened up the family tab sort by papers and geld the lower paper level foals.
I also geld any missing the stallions special genes by changing the sort to must not have ___ (plaid, axiom, nexus, ice or kit for my KP studs)
Then I open the remainders and comparison test snipping any AGA and adding my prefixes to the superiors. When I’ve gone through all that stallions foals I do another overlook search and narrow the list down to 3. Horses with homo genes are kept over het, single kit horses get snipped. If all things equal or if I’m in a hurry the top 3 PT get kept and snip the rest.
Once I’ve gone through each studs foals a search of my intact horses will all have prefixes and then I run a search for each generation.
I go through and snip any studs with low papers (most generations only have 2 of the highest papers kept until the majority (+60%) of the studs are papering the higher paper then the lower level gets snipped from that generation)
I go through each of my lines and try to narrow the studs down to 3. Sort must have ___ (plaid, axiom (each colour individually), nexus or ice (or Must have kp in the name for my KP studs)
I compare the genetics and again if a stud is homo for genes or has a big variety to choose from he gets to stay over a plain grullo. KP gets preference over kp. Lower paper levels get snipped.
I also have a line without kp or fantasy genes to use as fillers until the fancy genes fill up the pastures so I just mark the sort must not have any of the fantasy genes and go through and narrow those studs down to 3 too. (Again if I’m in a hurry or feeling overwhelmed too 3 PT works for me)
When I’m feeling particularly snippy I empty my pastures and reload them up and any stud that is of breeding age and not in a pasture gets snipped. Most of my generations have multiple stud slots in the pastures so he was passed over by another stud for some reason or another multiple times.
Good bye
It takes me a really long time to go through my foals on HJ1 but at 7-900 Foals per month and limited internet there’s usually a few months backlog. I’m also working on comparison testing all my mares.
But on HJ2 until recently I only had my primary pasture so there’s only about 500 to go through at the moment and they get zipped through in no time.
I try to do a lot of the testing and snipping without really looking at the horses so that ooh thats to pretty to geld doesn’t factor in too often.Breeding even generation Grullos with Ice -
I think part of my problem is I am breeding all over the place. I wanted a cob line for mushroom gene.
I love sport ponies but I have been having issues of how to get good breeding goals.
My closed genes are splash m, mushroom, chinchilla, and Onyx. I think I have one more as well.
I don't know how to use these genes. My other problem is I don't know genetics very well. My favorite color on a horse is buckskin and grulla.
My other lines I have are my Halloween Dancer line. Joeys Dream line. I want to revitalize these lines.
My other problem I ran into once I got foals that were Star papered and gold papered and consistent I got bored. So what do I do then because I find it hard to play when I have achieved that goal.
My other problem I don't have SBA. I can't afford a premium account right now. -
*pokes membership status* Use the force wisely this month! ;) I suggest not SBA your Joey & Halloween lines just yet, thin out the rest first.#28036Thanked by 1FeldingFields

If you like buckskin and grullo, a good way to get rid of stallions easily would be to use the color name slot in the search. Select "not like" and input "buckskin" and "grullo". Then you can go through and sort more easily.
However you decide to sort, do it a little at a time. Break it into little pieces, and it will be a lot more manageable.ID 43830
It's nice to be back! :)

I am a cold hearted cull-er. Everything goes through SBA, and I abide by that decision. I have one goal: Blinged out black livers with really great PT scores.
Culling is a serious test of your resolve! -
Yes like HTRanch says however you decide to sort break it into little pieces and it’s way manageable.
I used to feel super overwhelmed and it took me a long time to figure out my culling practices. (Which look huge written out as above but I’ve gotten to the point it’s a simple checklist I start at the top and work my way down. It started out tiny and grew as I grew.)
I started by looking through my barns and figuring out what I liked and what was ok or not a fan and wrote those down. I decided I was spread out too thin going in every which way and I needed to make a goal and stick to it and when I felt more comfortable I could reintroduce extra lines later (good thing about the licenses you can buy new stock if yours passes on before you get around to building them up without having to buy a new one with real money)
I decided I would focus on only 2 genes per server and have a 3rd plain line (not necessarily plain just not nexus, KP, ice or satin) to use as a filler for the other 2.
HJ1 - nexus and KP, HJ2 - Ice 1 and satin
Then I went through and added NX, KP(or kp), IC, Sa to all my horses prefixes that had those genes on their respective servers.
Then I looked at what my goals for the lines were and went through all the horses left over without prefixes and compared what they were to what I was working towards and if they were absolutely not what I was working towards I snipped them and if they sort of were close to or what I wanted I would put them aside in a barn to be relooked at later when my goals got tightened.
I found that labelling my horses helped me visualize things easier because I could search all of that line or just a generation (my prefixes includes gender, generation and line within the first 6 spaces so names still have 14 spaces) without having to constantly look through the search options to find the genetics to include or not include.
When I got comfortable with the 2 lines almost 2 years ago I started to add similar gened lines (axiom as it shares the nexus space on the gene sequence and other ice variations (5,8,14) to run adjacent but able to co-mix if I felt too overwhelmed again.
That went well so then on HJ1 I added another line for plaid and just made a replacement for one of my axiom studs with axiom Blue and wrong warp.
Which now brings my lines on hj1 back up to 7 but because I started small and broke it down I don’t feel as overwhelmed about it all.
Also spread sheets. Love them to pieces. When I started I made a spreadsheet with a tab for each line and a discard tab. As I went through my horses I listed them under which line they belonged or fit best in and then auctioned or altered what was on he discard tabBreeding even generation Grullos with IceThanked by 1Looper -
Thank you all. Thanks Haltanny I wasn't expecting that. Thank you so much.
Thanks everyone seeing how you all do your lines gives me hope of being able to get my ponies where I need to be. You all give me hope and for that I want to thanks. -
Did SBA on the stallions and cut my herd by half. Now have to figure out what colors to breed for. Grulla and buckskin.
