What Gen Should be Star/Gold?
-
Hi all! For several months now, I've been breeding only from exceptionally perfect foundations. I only keep consistent foals with PTs above 10.4. Color doesn't factor in at all, but I comparison test my boys to try to use the best of the best in each following generation.
Right now, I have a 2G Red/B line and a 2G blue/A line. All 3Gs must be blue/A. My 4Gs aren't quite breeding age, but any I have are blue/A as well.
I was hoping to start seeing Gold/Star in 5G, but is that unrealistic? Should I keep any Blue/A 5Gs I breed in the future? -
I do not think it is unrealistic to see Gold/Star at 5g, or even 4g. Not everything will paper that high at that level though. I have several blues at 4/5g, just because I don't have enough golds.
To get there, I started with exceptionally perfect with a full pasture bonus. I only keep blue/A at 2g. 3g is blue/A, but all stallions have to be as good as my benchmark boy. At 4g I get a lot of blue/A with some gold/star. I do not use the full pasture bonus for 2,3, or 4g, but I feel if I did I would have more gold/star at 4g. The big point for me is to make sure they pass SBA, and I am starting to comparison test my mares to weed out weaker blue mares.Thanked by 1KaleidoscopeAcre -
I have an ExPerf herd and only keep A/blue papered 2g, regardless of PT or consistency, so long as they pass SBA. For the stallions, I run comparisons to one another and keep the top 3.
I think it’s very realistic to start seeing gold* fillies at 5g. My first round of breedable 2g mares and stallions with full pasture bonus just came about this season. Of five blue mares with a full pasture bonus, I got three intact 3g fillies, which was surprisingly high to me. But all three fillies are blue papered with higher PT scores than their parents (11+ vs 10-10.4). I expect it will likely take me another two to three seasons to gather enough intact foals to create a 3g setup, considering, but for now, I’m keeping all 3g foals that pass SBA. I am hoping for more gold*/star* next go round, but we’ll see. 4g I won’t be keeping anything BUT gold* fillies and star* colts. It’s possible if I get enough 3g gold* to warrant it, I may also use that as my 3g “bar of excellence.”Thanked by 1KaleidoscopeAcre -
I just got star and gold papered 3G's today, but they're from my A papered foundation stud.
It's definitely possible to get Gold/Star in 4th generation using exceptional producers and culling hard, but they'll not be very many. 5th generation with your herd is definitely something you can/should expect. I did keep blues 5th gen, just because i didn't have very many mares at that generation, but i've got 60 or so now, so i'll be keeping only gold at 5th gen from now on.#28036Thanked by 1KaleidoscopeAcre -
My herd starts with exceptional. I will only keep blue/A at gen 2 and Blue/A at Gen 3 (though I have got 1Gold and 1 Star at Gen 3 with no boosts starting with exceptionals). By Gen 4 it is all stars and golds. I only get a few each season, but I cull anything that is not Star or Gold. I should mention it took me around 2 years to get there. Up until then, most of my Gen 4s were Blue and A.Thanked by 1KaleidoscopeAcre

For lines that start with C and Yellow, it is entirely possible to see Star and Gold at 4th gen. Rare, but it does happen. For me, it was C - B - A - Star, and Yellow-Red-Blue-Gold. That being said, I don't expect to see Star/Gold until 5th gen since I don't start with ex pros. For me, Star/Gold at 4th gen is a nice bonus to have.
Basically, I require A/Blue at 3rd gen, and Star/Gold at 5th gen. All my boys must be superior to their respective sires, and I'm now requiring my mares to be sup to their dams.
At least that's how I run my stable on HJ1. I expect to do the same here.Thanked by 1KaleidoscopeAcre
