Advice to Newbies
  • This is open to anyone and everyone, add yours and keep it going!

Leadup to my advice, the "why":
I was going to do some bulk testing. I had noticed some young mares who hadn't had all testing run on them yet and I was annoyed with my phone because pages were loading slow so it was taking me for-freaking-ever to test. Then it dawned on me: why click each one and then wait for her page to load so I could run three tests on each one when I could just select all, hit the bulk test buttons, click okay on the popup each time, and be done?

Oh, I clicked those buttons alright. #-o

I selected them all, then I thought I touched performance inspection. While I waited for the popup, I took off my glasses to clean them, and when that handy dandy black "are you sure?" box appeared I hit okay without reading it.

And then I ran breeding advice on a barn full of 120 boot mares and it snipped 69 girls I totally didn't want to snip, including this filly who I particularly liked.

Moral of the story: Don't be like Justa. L-)

Read those little "are you sure?" boxes every time. Really.

  • Ouch. It happens to every bootstrap breeder at least once. I did that with my snowflake bootstraps a few months ago when I was just getting going.

My advice would be to make yourself mini-goals each month. Whether it is to have a certain amount of breeding or show horses, or to work up to a certain daily bonus, or save up for your favorite tack pack, celebrating accomplishing the little things keeps me motivated and makes the game even more fun!

  • @HTRanch Or in my case, fairly often. lol I keep learning new ways to accidentally snip horses, it seems like. I snipped a liver foundie cob just yesterday and I have no clue how it happened. I'm talented. :))

I agree on having mini goals though, they help so much! I started out with my monthly goal being to add at least 5k to my daily bonus. When that got easy, I changed to 5k each week. Now my show barns add over 3k a week without me doing anything, so I try to add a total of 10k a week. It really does get easier to build up as you go, I promise!

  • I've snipped my bootstrap mares before as well, once the first season of breeding bootstraps cause I didn't know what I was doing and a second time when I got my first batch of all Golds. Talk about ouch!

My advice would be if you plan to have a set tack theme for each line, put a 1 in front of you line stallion's name, do one horse for each bone size too if you have a mixture of bone size in the line. Trust me once you put a large number of foals on the ground for each line per month and they all have tack, it's a nightmare to remember and find the right horse to copy tack from in the drop down list. I'm also on mobile so I'm not helping myself out much! :-))

*Edit* Also add the tack before you look at them as new 2 year olds... Saves lots of time from having to go through and reroll each one so the new tack shows up.
  • @justasaddletramp remind me not to let you out of my sight in my barns! Lol actually on second thought maybe I should give you a scalpel and set you loose with the ones I need to keep locked behind bullet proof doors... :-?
  • I'm in love with the no testing button. I hit it on my bootstrap girls when they are born, so I have to be awake at some point before they turn 3 to actually do their tests.

  • @Seaswell I used to use the no testing button a lot with my bootstraps, but I made myself stop doing it with the blues. I know I should test them all, I just kept putting it off. Now it's about half done. :))

  • @justasadletramp I do most of my breeding as I'm falling asleep at night. All the pretties make for sweet dreams, if I don't hit it they get clipped within days by testing whole barns.
