Is it worth it to buy pointed show horses?
-
So, I was going through my show herd and culling, when I came across this beauty! I usually change the name of my show ponies, but judging by this show ponies name she started with 202 points. But at 13 years of age she now has just over 1k points, and still gaining!

I'd keep her. She could still give you points and show earnings in addition to the daily payout for another 5 months at least.
Felt like the auction baseline was more useful with a horse I might lose at next rollover. Ex 18yo horse that has a Life payout out of a 1000 and not placing in comps/winning points anymore would be worth 2500 in auction. Or worth Life payout of 4000 but again not placing/winning points anymore and at risk of losing that 4000 value at rollover. These I would auction.
Here is an example of a horse I may cull but find it difficult. She has over 1000 points, still placing top in her comps and getting points and worth above auction level- but she's 18 and I risk losing that value if she doesn't pay it out by the time she turns 19.

Here is a horse I plan to cull because he is at risk at rollover, worth less than what auction can give, not placing well in comps and not earning many points anymore. I will miss him but I can make make up loss of 700pt pretty easily most of the time in the rescue barn.

I've already got my culling method, and that pointed show horse passed it lol. Basically, so long as the show pony is placing above half in their group, they get kept. if they're placing last or in the last few, instant auction fodder (once they have leveled off, of course).
But this post was more pointing out the fact that when you buy pointed show ponies, they can actually gain a ton of points, despite being a foundation. They're a very good investment!Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Two other examples - a pair I picked up via the Foundation Rescue. I think they had in the ballpark of around 200pts when I bought them. They've both more than paid for their purchase price in earnings from shows, not including their daily payouts.

And then there's this lovely lady, who I bought with zero points to be a broodmare, but kept her after she failed breeding advice. She's pointed up nicely, and gives me decent monthly earnings. Not bad for a little auction pixel pony.
